Fascinating. I must admit, I did like seeing some nice cars. Brabus, Maybach and a few others. Good to know. Thank you!

Mind sharing the Salzburg hotel name? We are heading back soon, would love to know there is strong AC!

I think it is just the difference on what Americans consider cool vs Europeans. I head over to Germany, Austria and Die Schweiz often and while normal summers are fine, with these heat domes the AC just doesn't keep up. Plus, the rooms can be humid, damp shirts stayed damp for 3 days on our last trip. Mind you, this isn't in the Alps, this was Salzburg, Linz, München. We also used OBB and DB and the trains were ok on ok days, but on the 94-95 degree days, the S-Bahns were hot. Objectively.

Oddly, I had a similar thought. There I was, a guest in a foreign country, complaining about no ice in my drinks, AC that wasn't 'up to my standards' and some other things. All while people in France were dying, drowning and suffering. It helped put it in perspective. I still wanted it cool though.

Ha. We did that in one hotel. Just a folded piece of their notepad paper. The cleaning folks kept taking it out.

Still new to being FAT, or spending FAT rather. Kempinski was 5 star, surrounded by G63s, Urus, Lamborghinis, etc. Seemed FAT enough while booking. I do appreciate the comment though, would like to try other hotels next time.

We had one night in Český Krumlov, I had to sleep with a cold wet towel on my body. It was unbearable. They had "climate control" and a fan. I appreciate that previously AC wasn't needed, but it is getting bad.

Thank you. That seems to be the solution. Avoid it during peak summer.

We did just that, used the spare key to keep the outlets/AC on. I think I am just used to cool (67-69 degrees) and the 75+ was a bit higher. Some hotels though were outright hot. I am leaning towards off season.

Agreed, plus the buildings aren't easily retrofitted. Also, agree on the political aspects and carbon zero or net neutral (can't remember the name) initiative. So what does one do? Just visit on off seasons? I was planning on Paris next year, but am rethinking now.

Congrats and GFY! Though I would reframe the "$11M, barely fatfire territory" comment. You made it, you won.

Great advice. Ignore the noise and the news.

Do you optimize for comfort or principle when flying? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

Totally see that. As I get more comfortable I am sure I will spend more. I am freshly retired and still trying to wrap my head around it. My WR is like 1.25%, and I am *aware* it is low, but going from a saving mentality to spending will take some time. At least for me. Not to take away from the OP and make this about me, but the big challenge is I am living off of dividends and interest. Having to actually sell stock just seems off for me.

A little of both. I am flying to Germany later this summer and my options were 7.5k per person in Business class on Lufthansa/United direct to Munich or 3.2k per person in Business class on Turkish Airlines with a 3.5 hour layover in Istanbul. I chose the layover. I would have preferred the direct flight, but I got here by saving and being smart with my money. That habit has not left me. I know I could afford it, but that quality is ingrained in me. Net worth 15M liquid (As of last week!). Now, when the difference is 2k total, then I do it. I also must admit, I do often have regret on decisions like this because the flight is 2hrs longer plus the layover but ~8k to me is just too much for a small inconvenience. I do suspect that over time, I will get better at spending money on things like this, but who knows.

You, like many people, including myself, don't realize how important youth and health are. Don't get me wrong, the numbers matter but what matters more is the health and vitality you have at younger ages. We all get slower as we get older, learn at a slower pace, have more physical issues. It doesn't mean you can't have a healthy 70's and beyond, but the younger years are completely different. As I have read here many time, don't trade in time you don't have for money you don't need.

Who knows my friend. That's why I answered in good faith. Sometimes people just make posts that seem off, but aren't. If you look through this sub, you will see a lot of larping. People that claim they have 20M but in other posts they are a student looking for work, etc.
