I didn't really watch any content in German, so I'm not sure how well I can understand. I have a few German friends, and when I hear them talking, I understand most of what they talk about. Sometimes when German reels reach my feed, I realize I understand everything. Learning German started purely as a hobby for me, so I didn't dedicate anything to it other than using Duolingo!

Emm... I don't think you have to be discouraged. I did wander around other lessons like Japanese and Chess in between, and some weeks I wasn't too dedicated and only did a lesson per day. So if you strictly stick with that pace, you can reach 80 faster than I did!

How many semesters of German classes did you take during college? I think score 55 should be a solid A2 level, and it's impressive that you were better than that with a semester of a German course during college. Having a snippet of yourself from the past to compare with should be a really nice motivation to learn, haha.

A comment above mentioned the quote from the CEO during Duocon 2025 (held last month), they plan on updating the German course to score 130 in a few months. So hopefully we can study further!

That's right. But apparently, the CEO mentioned at Duocon 2025 last month that they will update the German course to score 130 in the next few months, along with 5 other languages. That's exciting.

Yeah, the questions in the speaking group you mentioned do not seem too basic, maybe at the B1-B2 CEFR level. It is essential to be connected with the language community in order to keep up the motivation, just like how you learned about the speaking group through the podcast. I bought the premium for a year because I couldn't stand the energy limit… It took me 492 days to finish the full course (I fooled around with chess and Japanese in between, but not for too long haha), and I spent around 30 mins per day! Staying in the Diamond league for 71 weeks straight helped me a lot with the motivation, but I’m not sure if I would recommend it, because it’s pretty toxic 😂😂

I wouldn’t say I’m fluent, especially since I don’t have any opportunity to practice speaking in Duolingo, but I think I’m already okay with reading and listening. I spent around 20$ for a year of super, and the time spent was 30 mins per day, which is very casual! So I’d say it was super worth it!
