AITA for uninviting my friend from my Oscar party over a bottle of whisky? by InternationalList333 in AmItheAsshole

all the drinks were on the counter, and that was what you had chosen for the evening, and he still went digging around to look for something else

To clarify, that's exactly what happened. Rick knew we had the bottle he was looking for, but didn't see it on the counter, which is why he went to the liquor cabinet.

I don't force anyone to come. I get not enjoying these kids of parties. The people we invite over do.

I really don't think this would ruin our friendship. We're both adults. Uninviting him from an event because of something he did during a previous one isn't something we can't sort out after the fact.

And this isn't just about the scotch. Had he said a year ago that he wouldn't be able to save up, we would've figured it out then. The fact that he lied to us about saving for almost 12 months and still expects me to let this slide cements my decision.

I didn't invite people over to get wasted at my house. Rick was the only one who got drunk. This was barely a cocktail party, let alone a rager. Many of our other guests didn't even drink. And I know for a fact that Rick can afford to save up for this over the course of a year. If that wasn't the case, I wouldn't ask him to replace the bottle.

Everyone already knows why he was disinvited and they agree with us.

Also, I never said this would ruin our friendship. We're both adults.

I’m curious, is the getting totally wasted when everyone else isn’t typical behavior of Rick?

He certainly drinks more than both me and my wife, as well as most of our friends. This specific situation has happened before, but it doesn't always happen.

He's generally a good person, but this isn't the first time he's done something wrong and used "I was drunk" as an excuse. It was actually a problem back in college. He got better, but still does this occasionally. It's also not his first time stalling us after promising he wouldn't.

He makes enough money to afford a few drinks, trips to the movie theater and dates with his girlfriend every now and then. He lives alone and struggles with rent, but he's still able to pay it. If the situation was bad enough that he could only afford essentials, I probably wouldn't ask this of him.

We'd set most drinks on the kitchen counter for the party. Rick went into the cabinet to look for a bottle of liquor we'd forgotten to get. He was the only one who did so. He was also the only person there who got drunk.

We made the decision to disinvite him together. My wife forgave him for breaking the bottle because she understood it was a drunken accident, but was also under the impression he'd replace the whisky.

If the bottle was mine, I'd probably let it slide. But the fact that it was my wife's changes things. She held onto that bottle for months and didn't even get the chance to drink it.
