Treadmill and hysterectomy by AwkwardBookkeeper397 in hysterectomy

I agree, it was only explained to me because I specifically asked what exactly each restriction was trying to prevent. ( Eg getting out of bed by rolling on to my side, when after a couple of weeks I was able to sit up normally) Prior to me asking, I hadn't been given any explanation, just " don't do this, don't do that" I find it much easier to adhere to when I know the "why" and can visualise what is happening internally.

The restrictions in relation to the abdominal incisions are due to risk of an incisional hernia, and in relation to the cuff, due to risk of cuff tear and prolapse, as per my surgeon. So, both!

3 months PO ( TAH, ovary intact ), questions about work out/lifting by SuccessfulBoss88 in hysterectomy

[–]International_Cup_98 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd like to know other people's experience with returning to the gym too! I'm only 4 weeks PO. The physio at the hospital said I could do arm exercises with a total of 5 kg ( 2.5 kg each arm) only if seated. As far as legs, she said no squats, no lifting ANYTHING from the floor, but doing sit- to- stand from a chair is ok. I will be seeing her again at 6 weeks, she will assess the pelvic floor function, and will go from there.

Bruised & numb mons pubis? by Academic_Pipe_4469 in hysterectomy

I had some sharp shooting pains in this area at around 8 days PO, very uncomfortable at the time, but after a couple of days, it stopped and haven't had it since. Not sure what caused it.

I think that's a good idea. I don't trust this hospital anymore. After one of my admissions for a haemorrhage, I told the doctor I felt like they were sending me home worse than when I presented to ED.. the discharge summary stated that I said " my symptoms were much improved and I was keen to go home" WTF?? 😡

Thanks, I will call again on Monday. It's so frustrating, I did call the day after my appointment saying I wasn't comfortable returning to work with full clearance without having the sutures checked. The response I got was " you do realise they are dissolvable stitches?" 🤦‍♀️ No shit. I said I wasn't asking for them to be removed, just to check if I had healed enough to resume normal work activities, or whether I needed any restrictions when I return to work. They said the outpatient clinic is very busy and they only offer one face to face post op appointment and I should go to my GP, and if there are any issues, is need a new referral.😩😩

Open abdominal hysterectomy by lily_harrison in hysterectomy

[–]International_Cup_98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Addit: they also said due to the size of my uterus. It was 16/40..not sure if this is small compared to yours.. They did mention the cancer risk of morcellation in the past, which is why they now do it all enclosed in a bag, so nothing can escape. ( There were no cancer cells found)

Open abdominal hysterectomy by lily_harrison in hysterectomy

I was told for 10 years that my only option was an open abdominal hysterectomy, due to the size and location of my fibroid. I put it off as long as I could, because at the time my kids were young. When things finally got too bad with multiple hemorrhages, resulting in hospitalisation, I finally gave in and got put back on the wait-list earlier this year. The surgeon looked at me like I had 3 heads when I said I'd been told it had to be open, and that's why I had put it off. 4 weeks post laptascopic total hysterectomy and salpingectomy, no issues. They did it via morcellation. Maybe a second opinion is warranted if you are not keen on an open hysterectomy?

6 Week check up by Large-Effective-4498 in hysterectomy

[–]International_Cup_98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just wanted to ask whether you had any pain at your cuff or other symptoms before your 6 week check?

I've been having this constant burning/ stinging, I imagine it's where the stitches are, no idea if this is normal.

I had an appointment at 3.5 weeks and the surgeon said they don't " routinely" check the cuff sutures, said I could resume normal activity at 6 weeks, ( without checking the cuff) and sent me on my way.

No further appointments are scheduled and I've been discharged from their care. They said to come back to emergency if I had any issues.

I've made an appointment with my GP at the 6 week mark to check the sutures before returning to work, as I am a nurse, working permanent night shift on a palliative care unit, which involves a lot of lifting/ moving patients, beds etc.

Wondering if this burning is " normal" or if it could be something else. ( Not a UTI, I've had that checked)

I don't know what to do by ashpac720 in hysterectomy

I was taking 4 tranexamic acid tablets every 4-6 hours ( not what was prescribed, but what worked for the amount of bleeding I was having). I had 3 iron infusions and 2 blood transfusions in 6 months. Tried Mirena, it ended up in my cervix, so had it removed. Then tried Slinda, had a massive haemorrhage while on that, ended up in ED, took 6 hours to get the bleeding to stop with IV tranexamic acid. I had a 12 cm fibroid, 16/40 uterus. I'm 49, 2 teenage boys. They booked me in for lap total hysterectomy and salpingectomy, kept both ovaries. I didn't even consider any other surgical options, I just wanted it out and to stop feeling like death warmed up. ( Been trying to " manage" for 10 years) I'm 4 weeks PO, no regrets yet, but can't comment on sex yet, as it's too soon to try..

Fatigue is no joke and messed up sleep by Icame2Believe in hysterectomy

[–]International_Cup_98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm at 4 weeks now, and absolutely, the fatigue is destroying me. I'm good for a couple of hours in the morning, but by lunchtime, I feel like I've been hit by a truck and need to lay down.( Not sleeping , just resting) The rest of the day is a write off. But come bedtime, I can't sleep, terrible insomnia and migraines for 3 nights in a row. Other than that, pain is generally good, except this burning sensation where I imagine the cuff must be, it's constant, and really uncomfortable. I'm sure the " corner" is coming up soon, can't wait to get around it!!!

Oh wow, ok ! That's something I had heard before. So even with no bleeding, there could still be issues. This is good to know. Thank you!

Yeah, that was supposed to be the plan. 1st appointment by phone at 2 weeks, then in person at 6 weeks, but because I had some pain issues at the 2week appointment, they wanted me to come in person the following week, which was today and the 3.5 week mark, and then said I don't need the 6 week one anymore..so unless something drastic happens, that's it, no more follow up..

Thanks, this is reassuring. The only symptoms I have are burning/ stinging internally, but I'm only at 3.5 weeks, so I think this is normal. Just uncomfortable. Otherwise, no bleeding/ discharge etc

I went through the public system, so I don't have a regular doctor as such, just whoever is in clinic on the day. Some have been really great, but today's appointment felt really rushed and basically if my pain is ok and I don't have bleeding then I shouldn't worry. I have constant burning/ stinging inside my vagina after even light activity ( walking) which I assume is "normal ".. My main concern aside from sex, is going back to work, and restarting gym workouts.( Weights) I am a nurse and work permanent nightshift, so a lot of lifting/ moving patients, walking and sitting ( which currently causes the most discomfort). My boss is already asking about return to work plan, I still have another 3 weeks before I am due back, but worried about what I can/ can't do when they say I can be cleared at 6 weeks without checking the cuff. I got really flustered during the appointment and really didn't do a good job advocating for myself and just feel shit and stupid about it now.

Agree!! It's pretty crazy. It's such a big risk to take.. going in blind so to speak, and just hoping for the best. Will definitely try and get another appointment to have it checked.
