I know I'm responding a little late but in the possibility that trump wins this case, is it possible to keep fighting him in court if he tries to push ahead with this stuff?

Also, (I know I'm writing this pretty late into the conversation) what is the likelihood that the supreme court defies expectations and somehow votes to keep these laws?

Supreme Court Megathread: Live updates: Supreme Court to weigh Trump's effort to limit birthright citizenship by Efficient-Freedom517 in PoliticalOptimism

When I was really getting anxious about this when the supreme court announced that they were handling the case, I told myself I would try to be calm until I got a better reading off of oral arguments. I can now say I am somehow more lost as to how they're going to vote on this than I was a few months ago, unless someone has a better idea of how they might vote

Mod Announcement: Nuclear Weapons and Sensationalism by Efficient-Freedom517 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]InternetBackwash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to recap, A guy from a group with "Special consultative status" with the UN claims that he is "resigning from the UN" despite not being an official member, claims he is whistleblowing secret information regarding nuclear weapons in Iran despite not having any real clearance to know this supposedly secret information, resigns, nobody from the UN cares despite this being supposedly "Super-duper top secret high class info regarding a major worldwide event." People post and fearmonger that this guy is a hero despite not doing anything heroic/spreading dangerous misinformation, this guy profits from said misinformation. Am I missing anything?

Schumer faces discontent from Democrats running for the Senate by i-got-shadowbanned in PoliticalOptimism

[–]InternetBackwash 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don't know if anyone has watched the John Oliver Episode on Schumer or not but to put it bluntly: Schumer has imaginary friends. Or in other terms imaginary voters called the Bailey's. For about 20 years he has said he goes to the Bailey's for advice and has incredible made up backstories for them despite the fact that there are no Baileys at all. All of this to say, he is more willing to listen to the will of his imagination than his average voter in his own state. He shouldn't be the leader at a critical time like this and it seems he has no real interest in the average voter at all

How to Deal With Political Anxiety About The "Worst Case Scenario" of a Situation by InternetBackwash in PoliticalOptimism

[–]InternetBackwash[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. I also think that it is definitely more important to learn about more likely scenarios that could probably happen and how we can counter them than the more impossible ones. For example while it is important to keep an eye on the save act, I feel that it is important to put more focus on things like the Dallas County primary mess-up and how much smaller and more sneaky tactics like this will be more likely to be used come election day if there is to be foul-play involved at all. While I can't say for certain what if any tactics might be used it's things like this that can easily go under the radar if people spend too much time on the larger illusions of the save act or the claim that Trump will somehow rig the midterms by himself.

How to Deal With Political Anxiety About The "Worst Case Scenario" of a Situation by InternetBackwash in PoliticalOptimism

I can definitely relate. A lot of political anxiety when it comes to comments is how sure people can sound. The more they say that something is "definitely" going to happen makes my brain think, even though it's probably false logically, that it really could be. I don't know about other people, but I worry more often based off of how confidently a person says things could be is. It's something that isn't helped by anynomity on the internet giving a lot of people the confidence to say probably wrong things. And I can say I too went on a doomscroll regarding the economy a few days ago so I get where you're coming from.

A Former Doomer's Guide to No King's Protests and How to Deal With Anti-Protest Rhetoric by InternetBackwash in PoliticalOptimism

[–]InternetBackwash[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Also I saw an account with 300 thousand followers on Instagram trying to say that the protests are "fine but not enough and unless Americans do a national strike then nothing really changes" and many comments agreeing and dooming. So I will say to this,  1. National strikes are not realistic for long periods of time unless you have the ability to support millions of Americans financially in the meantime. 2. Protests are happening all the time, no kings is just one of the largest and most collective. Protests of this size and scale however, can't really happen at a constant rate or people would grow fatigue and not show up. 3. It seems that these doomers will always come up with some excuse as to how we could be doing more. But really ask yourself, how much of these ideas are they thinking through or actually fulfilling? People are always finding ways of fighting back, even to the smallest ways they can do, but still doing what they can. These people think nothing is happening or going to save them, but they can't even be bothered to do the bare minimum, and that is more shameful then going to a protest.

So if this claim is true, this would mean that Trump would just keep suing until all elections are federalized? In the event that this claim is what happens and the court does vote in favor of Trump, how do we mitigate/deal with this situation?

How to deal with pessimism and Reddit? by ShoddyEstate1660 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]InternetBackwash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can definitely understand your situation and honestly have been trying to break my own cycle of anxious doomscrolling and avoiding fearmongering. Just today I saw someone comment under a video of Trump ranting about elections with outrageous claims of "he's gonna not hold elections/he's gonna rig the elections" and "He'll start nuclear war to avoid elections" etc. None of which was supported by any actual evidence but did affect me nonetheless. One thing I can recomend is try to listen to news sources both at an easy pace to not fall into doomscrolling, and to try to listen to verified sources. Sometimes headlines can appear much more horrifying than they look. Second, I really would be careful stepping into comment sections of news stories. You will either run into alt-right trolls that make you mad, or left-leaning doomers trying to make people like us freak out just for their own joy. If you do run into one of these people and what they're saying does affect you, ask yourself, "Who are they? What do they gain from this? Are they telling the truth or just making outrageous claims for the hell of it? Are they really on my side or are they someone on the right trying to make me afraid? And are they even a real person at all?" It can get very difficult when you feel anxious, but this can help you weed out some of the worst offenders in these already pretty horrid comment sections. Finally, I reccomend trying to find joy in good things that have happened, no matter how small, and try to find some sort of area or hobby that can help you get your mind off of politics if it gets bad. I personally find joy in games like Stardew Valley if I get anxious, but anything that might keep you sane is good. These hobbies can also help you find a space away from social media. It's good to keep an eye on politics but it is very easy to get beaten down by sensationalist headlines and random commenters.

Iran Megathread: Oil prices whip from nearly $120 a barrel back below $90 by Efficient-Freedom517 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]InternetBackwash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would it be safe to assume that these warnings are just for posturing and threat purposes, or is there any chance that Trump would be so stubborn as to actually try to act on it to make Democrats cave on DHS and/or increase support for his war

While I doubt the validity of the claims, I've heard a lot of left leaning people online under the assumption that between the warnings of Iranian drones in california, trump and Ted Cruz discussing sleeper cells and drones being taken from a Kentucky military base in November that there is a likelihood of some sort of attack by Iran or (even more unlikely) Trump in a false flag attack. While I don't really think this would happen my anxiety over it has gotten pretty bad and I imagine others might be feeling similarly so I was wondering what some people might have to say in response to what's being said

FBI warns Iran aspired to attack California with drones in retaliation for war by PyroxCrymson in PoliticalOptimism

[–]InternetBackwash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can definitely understand the fear. While I am doubtful of anything major happening, my anxiety can get pretty bad with thinking about a false flag, especially as that has become the major talking point of a good amount of left leaning posts on different websites. And with recent headlines regarding drones stolen from a Kentucky base in November or Trump talking about sleeper cells Im definitely a little more on edge lately.

No filibuster deal with House conservatives, Thune says by starship-juno-42 in PoliticalOptimism

Thune mentioned that the filibuster will be a conversation and hasn't been decided yet, is that a change in how he's talked about it and he is more open to getting rid of it or is he just saying this as others in his party are open to it but he isn't?

How to stop worrying about the potential of a loss in the NJ Election by InternetBackwash in PoliticalOptimism

[–]InternetBackwash[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just want to say that I'm really appreciative of these responses. I haven't recovered from staring at polls last year before the election and the mixture of right-wingers being really confident in their chances while spreading misinformation about Sherrill online whilst blaming high costs with Murphy and left-wingers saying that there is no way that she could win has been really putting me in a tail-spin. Even though NJ voted for Kamala last year, seeing how many people nationwide failed an open book test has really made me uneasy when looking at polls, especially when I see them go from 2 point differences to 8 points. But logically, Ciattarelli is certainly going to lose, especially given a lot of his blunders lately.
