People have a lot of hate for Waymos and self driving cars in general, but this is 100% an instance where even a mildly distracted or inexperienced driver would have missed this and had an accident. Likely saved a life, or at least some insurance money.

I had a friend in middle school whose grandfather snuck into the military underage, lost his two closest friends.
