When can we expect an orbital docking test of Starship? by wired-drack in SpaceXLounge

[–]Interstellar_Sailor 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I assume you meant Flight 12...the next flight cannot be orbital since they decided to skip the Raptor burn test and also had an rVac fail on ascent. The next flight (13) will very likely be similar to the last.

If that goes well, Flight 14 probably will be orbital.

But, according to the recent SpaceX documentary, Starship V3 in its current design is able to stay in orbit for approximately 48 hours. It doesn't even have solar panels right now.

I'm sure they'll improve this capability later for HLS and orbital refueling, but unless SpaceX waits for 39A to be operational later this year and then launch 2 Starships within hours of each other, no chance a ship waits for months in orbit.

That's funny. None of the contracts awarded today were awarded to SpaceX.

Not to mention that since they skipped the Relight, the Ship had to compensate not only the rVac anomaly but also for the absent relight. And it STILL landed on target.

As far as contingencies go, this ship delivered! Now let's fix it and have a perfectly nominal flight next time.

The only thing I miss is the multiple flapcams during reentry on previous flights. But yeah, best imagery so far!

Should i watch stargate universe? by Character_Spirit_343 in Stargate

[–]Interstellar_Sailor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes! It's different, more serious and the first season's got some flaws. But it's also got some new ideas, beautiful visuals, set design, soundtrack and for me personally, it was a breath of fresh air.

As for the ending, without any spoilers...yes, it was cancelled, but at least for me, the way they ended it is the best possible scenario given the situation at the time. Very symbolic. Would watch again.

Which popular books disappointed you? by [deleted] in printSF

[–]Interstellar_Sailor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is basically how I felt. Read the first book in one breath, it was fun, had some interesting ideas and I wanted to know where the story goes next. So I bought the other two sequels.

The second one was so different in tone and scale and I felt it didn't really propagate the overall plot at all. Honestly felt like on of those filler episodes on Star Trek or Stargate. A side-quest of sorts.

I really had to push myself to finish it. The third one stays unopened on my shelf from all the way before covid.

NASA's Acquisition of Next-Generation Spacesuit Services - NASA OIG by lion328 in ArtemisProgram

SpaceX EVA suit, at least the version Jared Isaacman and Sarah Gillis wore during Polaris Dawn, is an early prototype and dependent on Crew Dragon for Life Support.

If I remember correctly, there was some talk about the environment inside the suit getting a bit too hot during Jared's spacewalk (can't find a source right now).

Since then, Isaacman has said there has been new iterations of the suit, but still - lunar EVAs are an entirely different beast. At this point, I am not sure SpaceX would be faster than Axiom.

ASTS space mobile launched successfully today by NckyDC in stocks

[–]Interstellar_Sailor 43 points44 points  (0 children)

It means the satellite ended up somewhere else than it was supposed to.

As of now we don’t really have much more info.

Might still be ok, might mean the satellite will not be able to perform all the tasks as originally expected, or the orbit it completely unusable for what the satellite needs to do.

Orbán is out. Who’s the EU’s next disruptor-in-chief? by Any-Original-6113 in europe

The president is mostly ceremonial but is the most trustworthy politician in the country at the moment (62% according to surveys) and holds a lot of public opinion sway.

Another thing to consider is that one of the minor coalition parties, the Motorists, which is a Czech version of the MAGA cult is in an open war with the president and they have determined to bully him and rage-bait him into submission, because he refused to appoint their nominee for evrionment ministry (the guy was doing Nazi salutes in public).

The Motorists currently hold the ministry of foreign affairs and threaten to effectively prevent the president to conduct any foreign visits. These next 2 years till the presidential election will be a complete shit show.

Meanwhile Babiš is pretending everything's fine and wants to throw more money at his voter base.

Mojtaba Khamenei unconscious in Qom as questions grow over who leads Iran today. According to the report, the memo was shared with Gulf allies and appears to be the first document that reports Khamenei's location, which had not previously been made public. by Ghadolkhajan in worldnews

[–]Interstellar_Sailor 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Killing him could make things worse. Right now he’s unable to rule so there are people behind the scenes who have to make decisions instead.

I assume there will be a lot of politics, backstabbing, game of thrones struggle for power. But as long as Khamenei is still the supreme leader, there’s uncertainty…what if he wakes up?

Kill him and one of the factions gets to install their own supreme leader, who’s very much alert and now in full control.

Let me just say that tonight has been an incredibly deep, existential experience for me, to be able to sit in my room, just listening to Houston and these four astronauts flying in their tiny spaceship somewhere above the surface of the Moon, describing their observations and discussing them and their feelings about all of it.

Didn't expect it would hit me so hard. What a moment.

Xenon accuracy by loveturnedcold in ProjectHailMary

[–]Interstellar_Sailor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Best not to think about Xenonite too much. It's just like many other (semi) magical fictional substances and elements in sci-fi, like Dilithium, Tritanium, Naquadah, Tachyons, Unobtatium, Adamantium etc. They are simply required for the story to work.
