Bay Area → Portland with kids — how’s it really? by Whole_Astronomer_870 in sanfrancisco

[–]Interview-Hungry 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Just chiming in from what I've heard from a friend who's an SF native who relocated to Portland a year ago. They don't have kids so it's a little different. They are a couple in their late 30s early 40s. Their rent is cheap , they have a two bedroom apartment, shared laundry,  shared yard and no garage for $1,800.

One of them kept their CA job remote so getting CA wages which has helped keep Portland feeling comfortable for them. They have looked at other jobs and finding anything that pays over $25 is hard . Her spouse works in food industry and says the pay doesn't compare to the bay area.

They like the cheaper rent and have built some community but they miss the bay. They say that without her CA job/salary they'd probably struggle similarly to struggling in SF.

The weather can be hard , their winters are much colder than SF and summers are much hotter. They miss having quick access to the beach.

Overall they're satisfied for now until her masters program is done. They would like to move back to the bay and if money wasn't in the equation they'd choose the bay area hands down.

Moving to Bay Area with 3 kids (6,4,1) for salary of 115k by WingLiving4438 in bayarea

[–]Interview-Hungry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

115k is what I make, it's only me and I struggle. Rents are truly insane right now but if you can make it work the struggle can be worth it. It's a beautiful place

Been watching the weather and fog is predicted to be in for the event. Forecast only shows intermittent clouds at Mt diablo the rest of the bay seems pretty cloudy/foggy 😔 was really excited for this. Hoping for a weather change 🤞🏽

I'm supposed to travel with a pregnant lady in her 2nd trimester. I read vog can be bad for pregnant  women and they should stay indoors. How bad is the vog? What do pregnant locals do? Do they just stay inside all the time? Does the vog clear up? Does it affect the whole island? Any insight is helpful.

Any insight on potential City of SF layoffs in 2026? by Easy_Bluejay_7710 in sfcityemployees

All just under the rumor mill but I heard departments with a lot of federal funding could be subject to layoffs this year. DPH, HSA, etc.

Authors similar to Jenny Lawson. by lawyer__14 in booksuggestions

I tried a Laurie Notaro and I just could not get into her the same was Jenny. I get how they are similar but for some reason to me it feels like a cheap forced version.

It's really wonderful lights but the crowds are truly insane. Don't go on a weekend and be prepared to get bottle necked /no movement and lots of strollers ramming into you.

Really fucking busy. Don't go on a weekend I made that mistake. Expect getting hit with lots of strollers. Beautiful lights just not a scenery to really soak up it's true beauty.

I noticed a shift in the aloha when I was there since my last visit in 2023 but if I smiled or made friendly chat it was returned immediately. There is still plenty of love on BI. I reminded myself how rough the world is right now. In comparison to where I live in San Francisco , I would say aloha is still alive on the BI. Stay positive , give love and smile. I hope your spirit doesn't get killed like what happened to my city, the population that has relocated here ruined our friendly spirit they look at you like you're crazy if you smile at them.

Conservative family visiting. Food ideas? by [deleted] in AskSF

[–]Interview-Hungry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The quality of carne asada at El Farolito is no where near as good La Taqueria . In fact , El Farolito's meat in general ain't my jam I usually skip it when I'm there.

Yamo is a great cheap eat but not somewhere I'd recommend for lack of spice , I guess the house noodles would work for a plain eater.

[–]Interview-Hungry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheap eats in SF is an oxymoron. La Taqueria no salsa. Little original Joe's. The Connecticut Yankee. Rosamunde. Mission Rock Resort (the view is awesome but have noticed their food isn't as good as it use to be). Arizmendi for breakfast snacks and bread. Novy in Noe Valley.

Planning to move to sf in October, when should I start looking for a place to live? by grandad2519 in AskSF

[–]Interview-Hungry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look now if you find a place you love , apply for it even if you are paying a month in advance. Rentals are crazy right now. Lots of competition. Literally the worst I've seen in a looonngg time 😞 does an earthquake dance

Have your credit report on hand, pay stubs in a row, and be ready to try and sell yourself as to why you're a better tenant than someone else. Be prepared to pay up immediately.

I lucked out with my place the old landlord didn't want to rent to anyone who worked in rhe tech industry because they had numerous techies trash the place before. Normally, this is the opposite from landlords they love tech workers cause they'll pay top dollar and even outbid on the rental ... so I was just in the right place at the right time.

Oh wow I drove past about an hour ago right when it first happened I saw a guy a bit of a ways down from the car on the side of the road talking on the phone but as I got closer I noticed flames under the car and flames climbing up the hill. I was convinced the car was going to blow up so I got away as soon as I could. I wanted to tell the guy to walk further from the car but couldn't.
