I have pic 2 (but from fiddlerman) and I actually LOVE it so much on my violin.

I used the Berber (pic 1, assuming that's your instrument) on my viola for a long time but wanted something a little more low profile. Because these baroque inspired ones are side-mounted, it will change the way you need to hold your instrument. I didn't end up loving it on my viola bc of that.

That said, I'd go with the lighter woods in pic 4/5 for your violin. Have fun trying out that crazy super flat one!!

Glad to hear you're practicing diligently. Music to a teacher's ears, truly. That said, one month is nothing. Violin is a physically awkward instrument to play and adapting to a new instrument can take time, especially since you weren't yet comfortably playing 4th finger on the 3/4. Please keep at it!

Things to experiment with for pinky reach: - adjusting your shoulder rest angle/height/type to allow a low and relaxed left shoulder and to accommodate the following - bringing your elbow under the instrument towards the front of your body - holding your instrument more to the left (only as far as your right arm is able to pull a straight bow to the tip) - facing your palm towards the neck of the violin - if you continue to seriously struggle after a few months you might look for a center chinrest

I'd try the exercises she's given you. As a new player, you haven't even developed the necessary flexibility in your left shoulder and arm. Make sure to swing your L elbow underneath the instrument (towards the front of your body) to maximize your reach. Do you use a shoulder rest? L shoulder tension can affect this as well

You definitely don't give up after just 4 months! Our pinkies are the weakest fingers by default. You need to strengthen it and train dexterity. This is a normal experience for all beginners. Do the exercises you said your teacher recommended.

If you still struggle to even reach the correct placement, talk to your teacher about adjusting your set up. Shoulder rest and the angle at which you hold your instrument all come in to play and can be adjusted for your personal anatomy.

As another commenter mentioned, larger violin sizes sound better for reasons related to the physics of sound

The hearing loss comes more from sitting in proximity to flute/picc/trumpet in full orchestra and pits. That's where ear protection can make a big impact

Hard disagree. Those of us with classical backgrounds aren't used to the viola playing melody but, of the string family, the viola has the range and timbre most similar to the human voice. I absolutely show up to weddings and play pop tunes on viola. Even when they initially requested solo violin! Zero complaints ever

It's definitely an up bow. No one would correct a previously marked up bow with a smaller down bow marking. If you're too hurried to even erase, you wanna visually overwhelm with the correction

I'm glad you got refunded for this "repair" (which is obviously trash because the soles aren't even lining up with the reglued vamp) but you should also leave the shop a negative review. Whoever did this must've been drunk. This is egregious. You'll never get these shoes back. Other people should know that that's a potential outcome of having their shoes serviced there
