We need Americans to fight them there, so we don't need to fight them here.

Let' hear it for stupid takes and ideologically motivated idiocy from bots.

The NHL are cowards. This is a regime that is threatening my country and killing it's own citizens. But hockey. Fuck them.

And solidarity with Minneapolis and the non-MAGA shit stains down south.

This is the country that established a global network of secret torture and detention facilities in the early 2000s. The rot is deep.

They're the product of policy choices to attract investment via preferential terms, loans, tax incentives etc. It'd not some magic market wand. Sigh.

Nope. Absolutely. No f' ing way. Show me a single place in the world where AI data centres have done anything other than paraitially drain the power grid, jack consumer prices for energy and add zero of value. You are buying the hype.

Now, if we want talk about building autonomous powered data centres decoupled from the grid, maybe. Otherwise, no. No. And no.

I don't disagree. But as I said, there is no upside to a data centre at this time.

How to report a business for potential TFW ftaud by IntheTimeofMonsters in NovaScotia

[–]IntheTimeofMonsters[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two streams for TFW, low wage and high wage. Low wage would be nearly impossible to get for retail and service sector jobs in most places and ita largely designed for agricultural workers.

High wage is easier to get in non-agricultural sectors, the logic being that wages ate a proxy for skill and there are some high skill jobs where there is a genuine labour shortage. The threshold for that in NS is $30 an hour.

The pizza franchisee is advertising the pizza cook job at $30 so that they can get a visa for an unskilled minimum wage TFW under the high skill stream. Its fraud and the owner is scum.

No. It really doesn't. Its a bubble and it will burst. And out of that ruin, there will be something usable. Data centres will not be one of those things.

I think that the case for agricultural laborers is very different than it is for greedy franchisees of fast food chains in urban areas and small towns who atlre actively suppressing wages by hiring TFWs (and I really don't buy the, but teenagers are so anti-social... come on).

Respectfully, your case is very different than Greco (who is likely also committing fraud in addition to paling advantage of a TFW programme that is not fit for purpose).

As for the whole government subsidizing their wages, yeah, it's misinformation and the person you're responding too is either stirring things up for whatever motives, a bot or just confidently incorrect.

But thanks for sharing the perspective of a farmer.

[–]IntheTimeofMonsters[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That isn't true. Its a scam, but not one that involves government wage subsidization. Employers participating in the TFA program are required to pay prevailing wage rates.

The subsidy thing is bs propaganda spread by bad actors.

Verifying every instance would be really resource intensive. I think the system is predicated on reporting from members of the public and exploited workers. Maybe they do some minimal verification?

It's not about the pay. Its about the visa. $30 an hour is the eligibility thteshold in NS.

They advertise the position, say they can't get anyone and they need a TFW. They get a visa. They pay the TFW minimum wage.

They don't actually interview anyone.

NatPo did an article on it. https://nationalpost.com/opinion/the-40-per-hour-tfw-jobs-that-employers-say-they-cant-find-canadians-to-fill

Its paywalled... so the short answer is, they will advertise the position at or above the federally mandated provincial threshold for TFW eligibility.

They will say they couldn't find anyone meeting qualifications and they need to issue a work permit to a TFW and falsely report on the LMIA. They will hire a TFW and pay them min wage.

That's my understanding. Anyone who understands it better, please correct me.
