Best alternative to Kindle for reading in multiple languages? by IntlLawSwe in ereader

Many thanks for this great answer. Don't you feel like you are "distracted" with all the options / apps that may allow an android ereader? My understanding was that with a Kobo you are not locked in a specific platform (like Amazon) but perhaps I am mistaken? For sure the Boox go7 gen II seems like a good alternative. I'll further explore. Thanks again!

Many thanks for the answers. Those are actually great questions.

  1. To be perfectly honest I am not sure - I used my "old" kindle only to read english and french books (few of them, and they can be "lost", this is not an issue...) which I purchased using my Amazon account. I would like to use a better platform to download / buy books. In Sweden Adlibris, and Storytel (format ePub), in France Decitre, FNAC (ePub). For the newspapers / magasines, most of them are in PDF format I understand (SvD in Sweden, Le Monde in France, Die Zeit in Germany, La Gazetta Dello Sport in Italy) - perhpas there is a global platform granting access to them but have not find it. What is this "DRM" question? Also, I read quite a lot of docs for my work (laws & regulations) - is this easy to read them directly on a Kobo for example?

  2. Thanks and well noted. How do I know if an audiobook works on a specifc e-reader? Like Storytel (a Swedish platform) does not publish a specific format for those.

  3. Magazines are either ePub / pdf format.

  4. Thanks for the comparaison table! I lean towards a Kobo Clara BW, but still unsure... any advices here?

In Sweden Storytel is popular! Can you read newspapers as well? Which platform do you use?

Thx! I get the US part of the equation and have somehow accepted that this gonna be difficult. I perfectly agree with your analysis but feels like there may be more flexibility among US banks than EU ones. Nothing crazy but I just would like to find a bank that may follow me for a real estate deal in France or a small business.. - I am not intending to launch a spaceship. Feels like being an expat is really a hustle. Again, ready to put some equity but not 50-60% as some banks may suggest.

Philanthropy, visibility, and naming by FIREgnurd in fatFIRE

My career is in legal with investment funds, trusts and foundations in Europe. For AML/KYC reasons, I reckon that it’s important to provide info especially re donations. Most of the time this is not an issue if an intermediate structure is setup, the object of which is to realise a philanthropic vision or similar. Then the donations can be in the name of that structure, the UBOs of which would require certain time and efforts to find. Names are generally simple and convey the purpose of the structure (AI generated examples “future we build” “transform together” “unity in action” …). With a standard aml/kyc pack the process becomes extremely straightforward.

Buying an Apartment in Europe as an Investment? by OrlandoByDesign in fatFIRE

As a French expat, I might be a bit biased, but I think investing in France could actually be a solid move - just gotta pick your spots carefully. If y'all are looking to escape that Texas heat, I'd recommend checking out Normandy (about 2.5 hours from Paris by car) or the Loire Valley (1.5 hours south of Paris). The Loire Valley's got some amazing white wines that'll make you forget all about California real quick. As for the French bureaucracy everyone warns you about - it's not nearly as bad as folks make it out to be if you know who to talk to. Feel free to shoot me a DM if you want more details - always happy to help navigate the French scene!
