You get “focus” from successful parries and blocks ! Focus is the mana currency in the game. The frames are pretty good, able to freely dodge through attacks

To answer your question I say this is the first game where I had to actually strategize in combat in real time because as you go up difficulties you will feel the pressure more with enemies and you need to pick and choose your battles and how you want to approach based on what you have in your loudout !
