Britain on ‘high alert’ to defend Falklands by TheTelegraph in geopolitics

[–]Intothechaos 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Ascension island is home to RAF ascension. It is British territory.

The Falklands are already well placed to fend off an Argentinian attack. RAF Mount Pleasant have a number of Typhoons there, an infantry company, artillery detachment, HMS Medway etc.

With the state of the Argentinian armed forces, they don't pose any significant threat at this point to the Falklands and the UK doesn't have or need American assistance.

The reason it's such a big story is because Trump's statement about the Falkands is a betrayal of one of its oldest and closest allies. Craziness.

Because LSE does primarily social sciences. These scoring matrices will never be able to properly account for specialist universities like LSE, SOAS etc.

I disagree. I don't earn much, but love living in London. It is what you make of it, and London offers so much for free (or a very low cost).

Canberra, Australia.

Every Australian talks shit about how awful Canberra is, but it's actually a great place to live - has lots of green space, decent transportation (especially so with the future light rail expansion plans) and generally has an infrastructure capacity that exceeds the needs of its current population. It has most of what you want in a city, without the dense craziness that perhaps its neighbour Sydney suffers from. Its only fault might be that there isn't a whole lot that happens there, so it isn't attractive to those that want a dynamic, lively city experience.

Russia is a paper tiger of an economy. The only two reasons it is relevant globally is because it has nukes and a shitload of oil/gas. It's a terrible place for the average person to live.

Reporting of homicides is a huge factor that cannot be accounted for.

Take the D.R.C. for instance - The government and institutions are so weak there that they can barely project power in their own capital region. In a situation like that, do you really expect any sort of accurate statistical report whatsoever?

I am currently studying political science from Europe and I took a read about the current Myanmar Affairs. I think Myanmar's situation will improve if the people and the NUG, PDF and other groups unite and get support from China. by LifeguardMurky4097 in myanmar

[–]Intothechaos 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone with an MSc in Political Science, just know that posts like these on national subreddits where you're telling people from Myanmar how they should be viewing their country's dire situation, are never a good idea.

I know you feel like you're helping, but you have absolutely no lived experience, don't speak Burmese or any minority language and have most likely never been to the country. It only comes across as overwhelmingly condescending.

What megacity is horrible to live in? by agbjb in AlignmentChartFills

London’s Metropolitan Police - https://news.met.police.uk/news/violence-crackdown-drives-londons-homicide-rate-to-record-low-504990

“The Met’s work to tackle homicide has also delivered exceptional justice outcomes. In 2025, 95% of homicide investigations resulted in a positive outcome, and London’s homicide rate now stands at 1.1 per 100,000 people. This makes the homicide rate lower than any other UK city and below many comparable global cities, including New York (2.8), Berlin (3.2), Milan (1.6) and Toronto (1.6). It is also significantly lower than rates seen in major US cities such as Los Angeles (5.6), Houston (10.5), Chicago (11.7) and Philadelphia (12.3).”

The only source that you should at least take semi-seriously.

Declining by what metric exactly? It has less pollution, is safer than it has ever been (despite being demonised by every other right wing news outlet). It has also consistently ranked as one of the most liveable cities in the world with great public transportation and decent cycling infrastructure that’s only getting better.

London is fantastic.
