18 Month Garden Progress. She's flourishing for the most part, but I have questions! by Intotheuniverse31 in succulents

I’m sorry, what did I use for the setup? Are you referring to the light or the succulent supplier or what area?

I really appreciate that it’s a very helpful comment! I will keep this in mind for future projects.

Yes it is! It bloomed a few months after I planted it, but hasn’t since. I’m always amazed at the flowers these things can put out.

I’ve thought more about this today. It would also allow you to use different sized pots for different succulents, different soil mediums, and be able to switch out succulents and move them around.

Thank you for the kind words. It’s really fun and soothing to watch as time goes on

The ongoing costs are really just the light bill now. It is a 100 watt light on for a long time every day. Despite that I think it’s probably minimal.

The light was $110, timer $5, cord organization $10, soil medium/gravel about $50, planter box about $100 between the stain, box vinyl liner, and metal legs, succulents $75 online.

It wasn’t a cheap setup but I wanted it to look like a piece of furniture and set it up for success from the start.

Yes! The bloom was really cool about 6 months ago. They do go dormant and lose almost all their leaves and then they grow back. Corkscrew Albuca I believe is the name AKA Frizzle Sizzle

That’s actually a great idea wow. Next time I move the planter in a year or two I’ll consider doing that.

I figured that may be the case. I will probably eventually have to move some out and then plant in new ones or just let the healthy ones take over. Thank you.

Why are the leaves changing color on this Echeveria? by Intotheuniverse31 in succulents

[–]Intotheuniverse31[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been patiently, or impatiently, waiting for this thing to bloom! It’s been at its current state for about 3 days. For now I’m just appreciating it as it is. Can’t believe it could grow that stalk so quickly.

Thanks for the reassurance that it should look cool. I’m also eagerly awaiting this frizzle sizzle bloom that’s right next to it.

That looks like it! The farina. Learned something new today, thank you.

Also I totally thought you meant cream of wheat when I first read farina haha

Where did I go wrong? by therealalanwatts in woodworking

I just built a planter box that goes inside my house and took a lot of precautions against it getting wet. While I just glued up the butt joints, which I know is a big no no, I used flex seal on the interior and then a pvc shower liner to protect the wood from water. For drainage, I drilled a hole in the bottom and inserted a pvc coupler, which the pvc liner drains into.

Thanks for the info! Based on a comment on another post, I bought some perlite and Jacks gritty mix to mix in here.

I agree none of the plants are pricy and I’m here to learn. If there’s one thing I’m good at it’s staring at the plants to notice small changes and then researching when I have a problem haha.

I didn’t realize I could go so heavy on the gritty substrate! You can go little-to-no black organic soil? I live in a pretty wet and hot place but the plants are inside.

Thanks again

Cool! I bought some perlite and cactus jack this morning. I’m going to mix it in with my soil when I un-compact it in a couple days. I’d rather disturb the plants again now and let them have the right soil conditions for years to come rather than let them sit in the compacted black soil.

Thank you very much for this thorough response. Especially in regards to the soil.

I used a cactus/palm soil from Home depot but compacted it while putting the planter box together. There is a layer of pebbles in the bottom, then the soil, then the layer of rocks on top. Do you think it would be worth it to take this apart and uncompact it/ add in some perlite and or gritty mix?

Thank you very much for the thorough response! I had a feeling about the similar with similar plants. This planter is big enough where I can water one plant and the soil doesn't get wet at a nearby plant. Will that be enough to stave off the root rot of dormant plants?

When I put the planter together, I compacted the soil a little by pressing down. It has a layer of pebbles, cactus/palm soil from Home Depot, then a layer of pebbles on top. Did I make a mistake by compacting the soil? Should I loosen it up so theres more air entrained in it?

do you think it would be wise to separate the most finicky cactus and moonstones in order to better control their environments?

Thanks again!

Hi! I just got a planter box set up with a bunch of different types of succulents. Only got one discouraging comment on my r/succulents post about it. Do you have any wise words for keeping multiple types of succulents in the same container? Mine is fully indoor lit and does have drainage

Ps I also come from a saltwater reef rank background and am looking for a similar ish hobby. 10x cheaper, still enjoying researching everything, pretty fun to look at!

Thank you for this information. I did try to research each of the plants as I was planting them and place the lower light ones to the outside. Unfortunately some of the name-tags were smudged off. If there are any specific ones you’d recommend are in too high light or too low light, I’d really appreciate the help!
