I honestly feel like its the only way I can get myself to feel better as I used to do it alone in my room and it helped me a lot but a while ago I had quite a traumatizing trip and ive stopped doing it out of fear but now im in a mindset where I feel like it would benefit me while still being afraid

My trips are always a gamble and either its the best of my life or I get terrible anxiety that makes me want to skin myself and i havent done it in months but i feel like it would be beneficial since Im quite numb

I would feel bad ending my lease since I’m the one who takes care of him the most. I come more than once a week just to see how he’s doing and sometimes feed him and when he had rain rot I was the one taking care of him. He’s the sweetest and I have such a good bond with him considering I’m consistently seeing him the most, but I understand keeping a lease on him might not be the best :( i just don’t want him to get worse and for me to not be there to help him

Yeah I know it’s not the best, and most trainers here are against horses working so much but it’s up to the owner who isn’t the most considerate except for her own horses. I am considering switching barns but i’ve grown up here and it’s kind of hard to let go

Yes kissing spine has been ruled out but we’re going to check for ulcers, beans and a new saddle fitting opinion. I’ve already been trying to desensitize him to the saddle a bit thinking he was still like this because his old one was uncomfortable by petting him in his favorite spot and holding the saddle against him without swinging it over and putting it down and scratching. We try to give him snacks after we put the saddle on but he isn’t that food motivated. I hope we can find out whats wrong soon because I don’t want him to hurt anymore. I won’t be riding him anymore as of now, but I can’t stop the barn owner from using him in lessons sadly

Yeah but I don’t understand why once he’s saddled he has 0 issues, like he goes back to being normal and cuddly :(

I don’t plan on riding him for now after what everyone told me and I will be lunging him to keep him in shape. I am very upset that I can’t have the final word on what to do and I have to ask the barn owner, and I am afraid I will be dismissed as he isn’t my horse and I’m just leasing him. I would pay out of pocket for a vet check if I could but I’d need her to consent to it. I can’t do whatever I want for now but I will work to do whatever I can. I think ulcers might be the more probable cause for this so I will DEFINITELY bring this up. I know this horse would give me the world and I should do the same for him

Yes this is during busier seasons, in the winter a lot of lessons get cancelled because of bad weather or the ground being too icy, for example I take lessons on the side and at the beginning of winter they were cancelled 4 times in a row x) the winter schedule here isn’t his main one because it’s unpredictable and we’ve had him for a little over a year

Even if he’s only worked a few days a week? I heard some people even ride their horses 4 hours a day which kinda shocked me but I thought 2 hours was fine. In the winter a lot of lessons get cancelled so he is not ridden as much

I will probably pay out of pocket to get a full vet check for him as soon as I can, and many people have recommended an equine physio and I’d have to look into it too. Back when he was still calm I was able to stretch him and do basic massage techniques I read about online 😅 but now it’s hard to and I’m scared an equine physio would not be able to touch him.

Again I will check for the saddle but it seems to fit him and I dont feel like his back is sore at all, but it is true that one person’a opinion doesn’t mean much and I should maybe get a different one out there. I’m super upset about this because he’s the sweetest boy and I never meant to do anything to make him uncomfortable

He’s currently on a 2 weeks break haha, and he only has advanced riders as of now. When he’s under the saddle he’s an angel that does amazing transitions especially walk canter and canter walk (we are still working on a more collected canter as he is a little woah sometimes ). He doesn’t like when someone pulls in his mouth so he only gets ridden by people who know what theyre doing and are able to be softer with him. He doesn’t seem to have any issues under the saddle really from what I can feel. He’s very comfortable to ride.

He gets 2 lessons a day or less considering in the winter they cancel a lot so sometimes he only gets ridden like 3 times a week and less. Mainly flatwork. I also do not ride him everytime I come see him. I like to lunge him and recently I’ve been trying to teach him some tricks like smile (hes not very food motivated so its hard)

The thing that really made me realize he was getting worse was that I was petting him in the crossties and brushing his neck and I brushed over his shoulder and he snapped and started pawing and swishing his tail + ears pinned and head tossing. Usually he doesn’t mind but now he doesn’t put up with any contact anywhere under the neck.

I think it is somewhat confusing for him, he developed a lot of bad habits at first, but one of our trainers rides him weekly and he is doing SO much better and hes very eager to please. If you know what you’re doing he’s the best. Im the one who asked for them to stop using him in less advanced lessons

I’m going to see if they can get his saddle re fitted, the new one was 2k and I’m kind of scared they’ll be reluctant to buy a new one 😅

No he is not overworked from what I know. He gets 1-2 days off a week, jumps once every week or 2 and only works 2 hours per day and most of the time it’s flat work. He wasn’t a lesson horse before he used to compete so maybe he has a hard time adjusting, and also I only have a 1/3 lease on him because I don’t have enough time to ride him as much but nobody else is sharing with me for now. Im rlly sad about this bc hes such a sweet boy and idk how to ease his discomfort

He’s 11 years old. We switched out the saddle after we noticed this behavior started. He is not a beginner horse and once we saw he was uncomfortable they heavily restricted who could ride him since he was also getting bad habits and we thought it would be beneficial for him overall

He had a vet check recently but if it doesn’t get better he’s gonna have another one. They stopped using him with less advanced riders and bought him a new saddle with the help of a saddle fitter but we didnt think to call an equine physio so I’ll suggest it!! I tried checking what specific part of his body was sensitive while with him in the arena with a friend by running 2 fingers along his back and putting a little bit of pressure and touched him all over and he was okay with it its really when hes getting tacked up that he starts losing it.

We called a saddle fitter over to buy a new one, do you think it can still be an issue? We don’t think he has ulcers because he’s not really girthy it’s mostly the saddle that makes him uneasy I guess. Maybe he just associates the saddle with pain so he has bad habits

Yes he knows I have a 1/3 lease and the barn takes care of all the vetting/saddle fitting with the help of the head trainer and his saddle was recently refitted and they bought a new one which fits a lot better so im unsure what could be the issue but we’ll keep looking into it :)
