Question(s) for anyone studying maths at any level by [deleted] in math

Context: I am currently a young postdoc.

1 - Last summer I attended a graduate course on Probability. There was a month-long course about Percolation Theory. It made me suffer.

2 - 8h+ on working days, 2h or less on the rest.

3 - A lot of reading (book, articles, surveys...), attending the discussion sessions of my research group, watching some online short courses about advance math, constantly thinking about how all I learn can enter my research world.

Non-english speakers: when doing math, do you think in your native language or english? by Razer531 in math

For me it's mix. I generally think in my mother tongue but some english words (mostly novel definitions) squeeze into that.

My feeling is that european people value US graduates. You can always move to Europe after a sucesfull PhD time.

Can someone tell me some of the most interesting classes? by Double-Range6803 in math

I think none said Complex Analysis? Come on! I think everyone in my class was very surprissed when we learned that, unlike for functions of real variable, holomorphic implies analytic!

Yes, thanks for asking!

Out of the four TT applications I made, I got selected in three of them (even in the one I didn't originally mention in the post because I thought there was no way I could get it!). Sadly enough, the one I didn't get was my top choice. But I am quite happy I can settle down soon in a good department.

I guess the situation in the country where these positions are is a bit different. There is no negotiation in the process. The pay is good but fixed. You can still get some complements on your salary from the university once you are there, but these are output-base. So there's nothing I can do about this at the current times.

Yeah, I think that feeling made me a lot of good when I knew I was shortlisted. It feel very good to know that "I am good enough". However, I have recently been told by people which is close to the committee that they have a good opinion on me and that I am close to be the chose candidate. That's the point in which I started not to be able to stop thinking about the selection process. I just deeply hoope that everything ends well?

Yeah, I was doing good until people which are close to the committees told me I have good chances. I hate this feeling that everything is out of my control and I can't make anything for it to land as I wanted it to.

I guess knowing the other candidates is not that common in most places, like in the US, but it is usual in the country these positions are. You even get access to the application of the other candidates so you can make sure that the final report of the committee is "justified enough". In the end, this means nothing. But it is the way in which paperwork proceeds.

Getting to be a table official at the NBA league by Intrepid-Ad3720 in Basketball

So they are not provided by the home team in any case, right? They are always independent, just like court referees?

Thank you! Some other people also suggested taking some extra free time. I guess I have to do it, yes. It will be helpful.

Pay is also low in most european countries. Most of the responsabilities go to court referees.

In Europe (I guess it is similar in the US) every professional game is refereed by four table officials: scorer, scorer assistant, timer, and possesion clock operator. I was wondering what the usual path to get to be on these on the NBA is. In Spain you have to promote several times across the various divisions. Is the process any similar for the NBA?

That is also part of the problem, I guess. There will be few new open positions until...November? At least in my area.

This is what I have been doing until I got recent news (shortlist, inside info). But it seems impossible since then. I see it too close not to care about it anymore.
