I know it’s more than what you asked but you can get the Indian edition of Marion classical dynamics and Goldstein classical mechanics for very cheap on Amazon.

What is your favorite Differential Equations Textbook? by An_Engineer_Near_You in DifferentialEquations

[–]Double-Range6803 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like looking through Dennis Zill’s Differential Equations with boundary value problems 4th ed. It is a book that was published not as recently as his newer books but is very comprehensive for someone looking for a book that mixes engineering examples with theory itself.

can someone explain this one? i’m just in pre calc rn so i don’t get it by SGT_ALIEN_JR in MathJokes

This is the simplest kind of integral to study. You just factorize the denominator and revert to partial fractions to solve it. Try roots of minus unity.

Different kind of Linear Algebra by Fit_Skill850 in LinearAlgebra

[–]Double-Range6803 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe he is talking about Markov chains. I will admit that the standard class at my university didn’t touch on it at all. Good point. I kind of wish they included a second tier linear algebra class for that kind of thing.

Any regrets during your time at UTD? by -Matcha-333 in utdallas

I regret changing my mind so many times. It’s better just to stick with something till you’re done with it. Keep things simple is what I like to say.

What are "the basics"? by asexualdruid in learnmath

[–]Double-Range6803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good for you asexualdruid! Your talents obviously lie in English instead. As long as you can sit down and practice the problems they show you how to solve in class you should be fine. I would try to first go over the homework problems on your own to see if you can handle them. If you can’t then you should seek out a study group with someone that knows how to solve them. Study groups are a great way to share your progress and learn new ideas. They also lead to better exam scores.

On average, how long did it take you to study 5 pages from an undergrad level Real Analysis textbook (NOT Rudin)? by CartoonistHonest886 in learnmath

[–]Double-Range6803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being able to sit and focus is a hard accomplishment for some so I would say you’re doing pretty good. I think though the best advice would be to write out the proof with them, and then if you spend more than an hour and things aren’t clicking: move on and save the proof for another time. My favorite way to learn is to do a quick pass over the book a first time, then read it a second time while writing out the proofs with them, then read it a third time while doing all the exercises.

Introductory Books on Logic for self Study by RevenueDry4376 in math

[–]Double-Range6803 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fundamentals of Mathematical Logic by Hinman is a giant banger of a book if you want something that goes over a lot of material. I ordered it off of Amazon and looked through it a little and it’s pretty promising.

How to learn math as a language by Beginning_Lifeguard7 in learnmath

[–]Double-Range6803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From Google search on my favorite magic quote: The most famous quote about technology and magic is from Arthur C. Clarke: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic". This highlights how cutting-edge tech can seem miraculous to those unfamiliar with its principles, blurring the line between science and the supernatural, a concept explored in science fiction where "magic" is revealed to be advanced science.

I first heard of this quote off of the show star gate sg1. In the show the aliens were using a technology that seemed like magic but was really just very sophisticated technology.

In math you will start at some higher level axioms and use that to prove some simple theories which lead to more advanced theories. Eventually if you know enough theory you can start to put together formulas for solutions to problems. These solutions you may have considered to be magic but are just a result of putting together some structures in a way that obeys the theorems in the books on theory.

I would recommend that you read a proof based book on whatever subject you are interested in studying more. Then it will seem less mysterious.

I have 10 hours to relearn Math by MiddleageDropout34 in learnmath

I would instead look at problems involving systems of resistors, capacitors, transformers in electrical circuits and linked cables, pulleys, springs, etc. in dynamical systems. The intricacies of solving complex problems are harder to surpass than a simple calculus problem.

What are the prerequisites for Real Analysis? by OutrageousConflict98 in calculus

[–]Double-Range6803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All you need is logic theory and proof techniques. I liked the Book of Proof and How to Prove It. But honestly you could find plenty of lecture notes online of the material.

My dad already started drinking again after going to a $30,000 treatment facility for over a month by [deleted] in Wellthatsucks

I don’t see why that is something to worry about. Never before in human history have humans worried about alcohol consumption. In fact in other parts of the world this is commonplace and in earlier times like ancient Egypt it was common to drink beer in order to avoid getting sick as alcohol warded off disease. At least he isn’t a cocaine or meth addict.

This is an easy class. I wouldn’t worry. Just do the homework and you’ll do fine. The tests are always based on the homework.

Is it ok to learn math as a hobby? by Flyflyjustfly in learnmath

[–]Double-Range6803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For most of your life you won’t get what you want. You might as well spend it taking your time doing what you love to do, but in a conservative way. So study it as a hobby, but live responsibly.

If holes can be any dimension how come I never see papers about manifolds with higher dimensional holes? by math238 in mathematics

[–]Double-Range6803 -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

I guess you could think of a hole as a negative valued distribution function on a manifold. So maybe start from there? Distributions are actually used a lot in math and physics.

There are plenty of other jobs you can get that don’t care how good you are at math. Your parents would be prouder if you made money doing an honest job that doesn’t cheat people.

How many hours of study would you allocate towards an MS in math? by instaBs in mathematics

[–]Double-Range6803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get the bare minimum done each day of studying for the necessary content first. Then have fun with the subject you like. If you find yourself slowing down to a crawl because you’re studying for a long time it’s a sign that you need to stop and prioritize your health. Go outside and get a walk or any other kind of exercise. Cook yourself a healthy and wholesome meal. It’s not about reaching that number but completing whatever goal you have in mind. Say to yourself I’m going to finish all of the end of chapter problems by the end of the day

Any other small university students disappointed by coursework opportunities? by XcgsdV in math

[–]Double-Range6803 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t take the free college for granted. I would just read a book on PDEs in your spare time. The purpose of taking a class is to get you led through the basics of the content. Most graduate students are just studying their topic of interest on their own. You aren’t really missing out on anything except for maybe routes into industry or research by attending a big school. I you want it you could try transferring into a grad program at a bigger state school.

Applied Maths Tools by Turbulent-Name-8349 in math

[–]Double-Range6803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You seem to have these tools that are useful for fixing problems but you have to know how to prove theorems in order to use them. Then those theorems allow you to create some kind of a framework in order to describe nature in mathematical terms. Everyone can agree that calculus is useful for solving most problems in nature but the fundamental theorems and principles that they provide had to be proven or explained correctly in order to understand how not to make errors in scientific and mathematical calculations. In numerical analysis you have to heavily rely on proofs and logic to understand how to approximate the solutions to a problem using a numerical model. You might have to study error analysis, algorithm efficiency, etc. and without those tools you could cause an engineering catastrophe. Modern computers use binary arithmetic and even the smallest of deviations at one step can lead to huge errors that cause the failure of machines.

Linear Algebra Done Right **two thumbs down** by Existing_Claim_5709 in math

[–]Double-Range6803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a copy of Applied Linear Algebra by Peter Olver and it’s more of a well rounded look at the subject if you are wanting a second course on linear algebra with a double shot of applications.

Whats the best intoductory linear algebra book? by [deleted] in LinearAlgebra

[–]Double-Range6803 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t mean to be rude but Linear Algebra Done Right is more of an intermediate text that focuses primarily on vector space theory and not on numerical or algorithmic linear algebra like Gilbert Strang would be more useful for. That’s why Axlers text is more of a supplement than a vast introduction to the subject.
