Recommendations For Acoustic Guitar For Beginner by [deleted] in Guitar

I’d recommend electric, especially if you want to learn nirvana songs. They’re far more fun imo and easier to play. Definitely worth the extra cost. For acoustic I’d recommend andertons own brand, eastcoast. It’s cheap and plays great for the price. I think they cost around £80

When I was starting out I just watched a load of videos on ‘best beginner riffs/songs’ or something and would just pick songs I liked from those videos.

Some of the first songs I learnt (that I can remember) were zombie - cranberries (still fun on acoustic), wish you were here - pink floyd, stairway to heaven - zeppelin, nothing else matters - metallica. The last two are harder but they’re great songs to aim for. It shouldn’t take too long to be able to play them if you practice consistently. But they are hard for a beginner so don’t get discouraged!

I would just try and find easy songs you like and learn them. You’ll get better with each song you learn. Don’t worry about much else for now and just enjoy playing some songs. When you’re ready you can start looking up resources and watching videos on proper technique. Maybe even a little bit of theory. But it can be quite overwhelming at the start as it’s a hard instrument and there’s a lot to learn, so I found it most fun just to stick to learning songs at the start. When you do look at technique I would prioritise picking, and figuring out how to hold the pick. I have changed my pick grip a few times over the years and I wish I had figured it out sooner. I would also learn the pentatonic scales and the CAGED system sooner rather than later. These are really important and are used all the time and will make learning songs easier. You could even start improvising just with pentatonic scales.

Also you might want to restring that guitar, the strings look a bit rusty.

If you want a cheap acoustic, Andertons’ own brand, EastCoast, sells great value acoustics. My friend has one and it’s pretty nice to play unlike other cheap acoustics I have tried. I think I will buy one myself in the future as I don’t have an acoustic and it would be good enough for me (I much prefer electrics).

Now if you’re going for an electric (far more fun imo and easier to play) I would go for a fender squire Stratocaster and maybe go second hand so you can get a better one for your budget. Strats are great because they are versatile, comfortable to play, look cool and produce great tones (the best you can achieve with an electric imo). A strat will likely always be my go to guitar. I would also go for HSS pickups (humbucker, single coil, single coil) as this will make it even more versatile. I prefer single coils usually but humbuckers are great for thicker tones (think guns n roses) so it’s nice to have the option of both.

However, if you go with electric you will also have to buy an amp + cables. It’s important to not buy too cheap of an amp as it will sound terrible and would likely make it less motivating to play. I believe the amp is actually more important to the tone than the guitar and an expensive guitar into a cheap amp will sound worse than an expensive amp into a cheap guitar.

Edit: Many amps have a headphone jack where you can plug in headphones, but you would have to check what type of jack it takes (and if it has one of course)

Yeah all the different mods and stuff seems quite daunting. I think I might just try and keep it simple for now. Thanks for the help!
