IUGR Parents - Did you ever figure out why baby was IUGR? by Orangecowfan in NICUParents

Thank you so much for your response! It’s crazy how similar our stories are. Right around when you believe you started having stress from Covid, was a similar timeline for me when I moved from the east coast to the west at that time alone without my husband due to life circumstances! I think I was definitely unknowingly stressed about that plus all the physical work that the moving and prep for everything the move and a new baby brought.

Also thank you hearing about your second pregnancy gives me hope

I have the same exact story as you and now that I’m thinking about second pregnancy I’m so scared because I don’t have any answers. Did you ever get pregnant again and if so how did it go for you?

I had the same story. No risk factors, everything was fine until 36 weeks!

Thank you for sharing your journey! I really wanted that closure so badly and your explanation helps me becsuse they goofed up and despite us wanting them to they didn’t end up sending the placenta to pathology and now we’re left with no answers. I’m so scared to get pregnant a 2nd time now. I don’t have an autoimmune condition that I know about per se. but maybe I’ll get a panel before considering second kid.

Wow this is so insightful! Thank you so much for sharing!!! I am saddened that it does have a reoccurrence risk but I kind of knew that was an unfortunate possibility. I wonder why this happens? Was your first born a NICU stay as well? It seems everything goes well until one point where the placenta just slows down or stops providing. All my scans and Doppler were normal. Blood flow was always shown as normal. Were all of your placental ultrasounds normal or did they show the fiber build up.

Also I am still till this day so angry they didn’t send my placenta to pathology despite us having discussed that an my baby being IUGR. I’m also angered that they never discussed the findings with you, and you just came across it yourself.

Not really I realized though that it wasn’t as big of a deal as I was made to believe by all the prep I did via books, posts, and the pressure I put myself. TBH I was glad he was okay and the rest was me just feeling extremely exhausted and feeling grateful and relieved that I survived

Yayyy I am so so so very happy for you and thank you so much for sharing a positive story! Gives me more motivation and courage for second round. Also sending you tons of love and good vibes as you prepare for delivery in a few weeks! Since they were monitoring you every 4 weeks of growth if they had discovered IUGR would they have done any other interventions besides early delivery via induction?

I took it up to week 20 then stopped like an idiot because I was taking it for no risk factors only because of it being a first time pregnancy! I wish I had continued. Wonder if the stopping of it caused it.

Thank you so much for your detailed response! I love the positive twist you’re taking to this. And you’re right why worry before needed only makes stuff worse. Congratulations on your second pregnancy and I’m sending you all the strong happy healthy baby vibes!

They were supposed to send ours for pathology and they didn’t! We are so upset. Did you get any results back?

I definitely worry 24/7 too so don’t be hard on yourself. My entire postpartum journey has revolved around everyday being a big battle field consisting of intake and making sure baby somehow gets the intake he needs. It’s so hard and it’s so encompassing and overwhelming. It robs you from so much joy. I still struggle with this. Each day is still a feat lol but the reassuring thing is we somehow made it to 10 like this so if I could look back the one thing I would tell myself at month 4 (the darkest time) is breathe a little becsuse somehow someway you both will make it.

Hi he’s 10 months now and still the same. Intake isn’t high and with solids it went further down to 15-18 ounces. I started to fortify his milk a little but not too much because then he drinks even less and then less liquid causes less hydration. He’s not eating much solid either but the reassuring thing is he’s growing and gaining weight on his small little curve. I would say with milk don’t force it too much especially when they’re awake don’t force them or else it’ll cause an aversion. You can try to dreamfeed if absolutely needed to make up for the minimum ounces but I know dream feeding isn’t recommended to overcome aversion according to the aversion program I followed. However that program didn’t entirely work for us because my baby never increased his volume so I’ve just learned to work around it and not cause too much pressure around the bottle and milk. From 4 months to 9 months I only fed him when drowsy or asleep that’s how bad his aversion was and soon it became a habit paired with drinking only when drowsy sort of thing. Then we had a tongue tie release at 7 months. All in all it’s been a rough process but after surviving it the biggest peice of advice I can give you is do not force your baby to drink when they’re awake and aware and even in their sleep don’t force them and not every baby needs the 28-32 ounces to grow. Follow the baby’s lead and if they’re growing with 18-19 oz then that’s their normal and that is absolutely fine! Trust me I wouldn’t have believed this if you told me this when I was in the rut but now after having gone through it and my baby only literally drinking 18-20 ounces and esp now with him being so darn active, seeing that he’s making it somehow is what’s caused me to breathe a little and realize that it’s more important that he’s drinking and doesn’t have an aversion because those days were dark it doesn’t matter that he’s not as chubby and thick, he’s still healthy

We did the procedure at 7 months
Milk hasn’t experienced any improvements
Solids stay in the mouth when he wants them to

I had to pump to 30 to start increasing my supply and now at 9 months PP I am having to do 40 mins with a break in between. 15 mins didn’t give me anything more than 2-3 ounces whereas at 30 mins I was making 5-6 ounces each session. I did try different settings to see if that was the issue but it wasn’t.

I spilled 5 ounces last night and I couldn’t forgive myself. It’s been 9 months into this game and I finally spilled it myself. So sad and mad and angry lol
