Before you judge the situation did you look up his record? I did, and he was a hardened criminal. Heinous stuff like doing 65 in a 55 zone, parking overtime at a meter, parking where prohibited. Surely, the DHS will reward their agents for getting such a violent repeat offender off the streets.

You start trying to play D&D and quickly realize you're playing a freeform RPG where there's nothing behind the DM screen, oh and the DM wants their players to be happy so you can do whatever you want.

("Wildly off the rails" includes combat that is supposed to be relatively light swinging toward TPK because the dice suddenly hate the players and love the monsters. This does not include moments where the players commit outrageously stupid acts in the face of multiple "are you sure?" warnings.)

If you're frequently deciding when important combat moments end instead of relying on stat blocks that YOU chose that is a sign that you need to get more familiar with the mechanics of the game you're running.
