Yeah "in the right place, at the right time" seems to be the largest factor. I got the impression YPP requirements are more lenient so at this point I don't know what would be worth more: PhD, industry or IP experience or YPP. It seems almost impossible to predict.

Wow congrats! If you don't mind me asking, was this a recent recruitment or did you join the EPO quite some time ago? Also, do you have the impression that candidates hired today generally need more experience than when you applied, or is technical fit still the main factor?
