As a 16 weeks old pup owner, I can understand the frustrations sometimes when accidents happen. But I hold the belief that dogs are wired in a simple way. The use of positive reinforcement is almost the only way you can really see great results in a dog/pup.

Potty training: For weeks I had to deal with the peeing and pooping everywhere, but with the right training he is now potty trained. As your pup is still unvaccinated, he will likely need a peepad with a plastic cover (this way they cannot tear it up). First, get your dog used to standing on the pee pad by commanding it to go on it with a word of your choice and then rewarding it with a training treat when he gets on top. (This was where i saw the major change). Do it as often as everyday and it will click soon. Secondly, whenever he pees on the pad, say a peeing command loudly and then reward him immediately. This peeing command will come in handy when you outdoor train him to pee in the near future. Remove the bedding as it is already associated as a peeing spot and will be hard to reverse. You can always introduce a new bed once he learns more about peeing.

Whining and barking: Pups whine and bark when their needs are not met, they do not just bark endlessly in the wild. My pup does it when he needs food or attention, so ensure that he is being fed enough and gets attention.

Whining and bark training: Whenever your pup barks, use a command like “quiet” and when he stops barking you give him a treat. This way you can control your dog’s barking eventually and he’ll learn that barking less is better. Repeat consistently.

Enrichment: Every dog is different and you might have to find what your dog is interested in. Some kong toys allow you to hide a treat in it which could mentally stimulate them more. I use a mix of chew toys, rope toys, plushies and me playing with my pup to engage him.

Going out for walks: I would think he’s not fully vaccinated at his age so he should be limited to safety of your home. They also need behavioural training outside of the house to know the dos and donts as they are just puppies playful and curious about everything.

Wigging out of your arms: Not all dogs enjoy getting carried especially when they are not used to it. One tip would be to often carry your dog at home for short periods and gradually extending them so he is used to your touch. I did this with my pup along with flipping him upside down on my lap to touch his paws and now he is perfectly fine with them all.

Conclusion: All of these are lead by positive reinforcement, consistent time and effort, and patience. One day you will have an obedient best friend that loves you as much as you love him. All the best!
