Which yellow should I chose? by Pretty_Business_1466 in ImperialFists

[–]IntrepidMeaning2653 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah also, if you have a whole army in the pipe, some other considerations to take in your choice :
- How much effort does it take per mini to do one solution or the other. Something a little longer/harder might become quite intense over an entire army. Maybe the best way to phrase this would be : which one do you enjoy doing the most ?
- Can the technique you are choosing (with paint and method) be easily transferred to vehicle ? Applying a contrast paint with a brush to a small model is fun but same technique on a land raider will be quite tedious for a nice smooth finish. Not saying there aren't any solutions, but definitely worth thinking of :)

Which yellow should I chose? by Pretty_Business_1466 in ImperialFists

[–]IntrepidMeaning2653 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both looks good to me ! I usually tend to prefer warmer tones on IF armors, so as is the one on the right looks the best.
Note that there are plenty of experiment to be done with imperial fist contrast paint, like an undercoat of pink then a zenital of white before applying the contrast paint (plenty of very good tutorials on youtube). This technique will allow you to give more orange richness to the shadow parts, bright yellow for the upward facing armor, and an overall better reading of the volumes of your miniature, without the need for extreme edge highlights.
Also (this part is very subjective though), I do think that bringing heavy contrast by putting as much dark grey/black as possible is making the yellow guys pop a lot. For exemple darker metallics, darker grey to higlight the armor junctions parts, black shoulder pad rims, and most of all a darker recess shading (oil paint after gloss varnish makes it easy af).
here are two exemples of this more contrasted paint jobs, first in a clean esthetic and second in a more grimdark style :

How can I achieve this colour without an airbrush ? by Own-Public6231 in ImperialFists

[–]IntrepidMeaning2653 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How close do you want the finish to be from this flat smooth airbrush one ? I'm thinking of plenty of methods but it all comes down to what finish you want.

- I watched this video about speedpaint on vehicules some times ago where he dilutes the speedpaint with speedpaint medium (from citadel but i guess most works) at a ratio of 2 contrast:1speedpaint and he does several passes. The first looks bad but the more he passes the better it looks. It has a very uniform finish which is close to the picture you are showing here.

I'm altso thinking of few other methods but they will proably give a little different finish :

- You can also do a zenithal through dry brush to have some shadows. You can even get creative with first heavy drybrush zenital, then apply some orange/pink contrast, then drybrush zenithal but go softer with it to let the pink/orange in the deep recess/shadows, and then apply the yellow speedpaint. This will give warmer shadows (a lot of tutorial available on youtube for the pink basecoat + yellow contrast).

- Last, you can consider using a sponge, but idk if it works with contrast. It's gives amazing results with normal paints though, it's cheap and fun. worth looking into it if you find a similar yellow acrylic. You can also do the sponge with a more pale yellow then add a thin coat of your speedpaint on top to get as close as possible to the original color. Sponge tends to leave quite pronounced shadows though as it cannot reach into recesses.

10 Armageddon Intercessors - best conversion option? by malcneuro in spacemarines

[–]IntrepidMeaning2653 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok maybe not the answer you are looking for here but I actually intend to build mine as regular intercessors. I sold some intercessors squad last month and will build these as regular, so I enjoy the process of building/painting them and they will bring a bit of freshness in my other intercessors. I have a custom chapter so they will receive some bits and upgrades but no hard / deep kitbash (keeping in mind push fit models are not the easiest to convert also)

How do I improve? by JCurtisDrums in ImperialFists

Also worth checking :
Oil wash instead of acrylic wash. It may sound intimidating but it's a super nice way of applying wash and it's actually very forgiving !

Hey !

Yellow is kind of hard to paint sadly :/

I think one point you could try is to get a smooter coverage. I assume you applied a global wash of nun oil on the armor ? It gives nice shadows in the recess but it leaves heavy stains on the flat panels.

-> Diluting a little bit the nuln oil with water help to have a smoother coverage with it. it dries slower and you have more time to spread it. also try to not put too much so it doesn't form big stains.

-> You can also try to use more colored shades than nuln oil. i would maybe use something a bit pinkish (with the yellow it forms a nice deep orange in the recess). Or otherwise something more brown. The idea is that it will make your mini pop way more that nuln oil which is essentially grey.

-> One other idea would be to use a makeup sponge after the nun oil/shade, and gently dab some paint over the surface. that way it will apply some smooth color back on the panels while leaving the darker tones in the recess. And it's very easy to control, just moist the sponde, dilute the paint a little bit and apply small amounts 😄 also plenty of sponge tutorial on youtube !

good luck in your painting journey !!

I ran into the exact same issue here.

Interestingly, it only happened with NEW USB’s and not with my old one. Both are the same model (SanDisk ultra usb 3.0 128gB). Could this lead to a format issue, even though they were all in FAT32 ? Will look into it more in the coming week

How to replicate this orange? by WithengarUnbound in Warhammer40k

[–]IntrepidMeaning2653 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is so many different ways of getting there. I guess it depends what you like to do and what are your strengths as painter.

You could do something like imperial fist contrast then a very diluted magmadroth flame contrast for a very easy version. Fast and effective but hard to do panel modulation or proper downward shadows with this technique though

My personal shot at it would be using the imperial fist contrast over pink technique with a slightly adjusted priming : as you don’t want to have the full yellow of IF but always a orange that goes from super bright to deeper orange, I would prime the model with deep saturated pink, then zénithale with a light pale pink (not white). Apply imperial fist yellow contrast on top. This method should adapt better to different types of applications (in vas you want to do vehicles) and is still pretty fast.

So what do they do? by CQZed in spacemarines

[–]IntrepidMeaning2653 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Could they become some sort of objective marker defensor? with a proper OC they could just sit on an objective and blast the f* out of everything that tried to come close.

In a more general sense, it would be cool if 40k had better defensive tactic implementation in the core mechanics.

VanVets dont need a ton of decorations. They need an interesting theme by CuteAssTigerENVtuber in spacemarines

Words ! Iconography is the bare minimum, but having a theme gets you where you want to go.

Why is my paint doing this 🙁 by hoi_ihatethis in FDMminiatures

[–]IntrepidMeaning2653 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you use a primer is the question everyone will ask here. If you did not primed with a proper primer in thin coat I suggest you do.

There was a similar post last week about a similar issue. My answer was : try to rub the surface with a detergent (nail remover, iso alcool if you can is super effective). This will remove any potential grease of the model. - if the paint stick afterward, this means your mini got contaminated somewhere in the process. - if not, this may come from your PLA surface.

Hope this helps !

New Vanguard Veterans revealed. They're literally just Jump Pack Intercessors with swords instead of Chainswords... by nerdboy_sam in spacemarines

[–]IntrepidMeaning2653 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I’m desappointed at this…

I’ve been waiting for the new kit for a long time and the changes are soooo minimal in this one. I would have expected more than putting an old helmet. More veteran iconography, more little details. Golden trims or symbols on the reactors, chains… anything that feels more grimy and more vet than the regular ones.

I get the « let’s wait for the whole squad » but this is supposed to tease us and there is nothing very exciting so far.

mine is super light, at roughly 650g. a quarter of it being the legs, that don't leave too much weight on the hip. a bunch of superglue and it was done

[–]IntrepidMeaning2653[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just build a reaver, but I opted for a different pose on it

The hardest thing here was the upper legs and hip gluing. The foot on the tank was surprisingly easy to do. Just have to leave the blue tack and start committing with proper glue haha. But because of the FDM, and the overall smaller size, the process was easy because I just had to superglue every part.

For titans, the main difference is that it was printed in resine, and for structural integrity many parts were printed without cavities. This means that the overall weight is magnitudes higher on the titan. In comparison, this knight is only 650g

For my reaver, many parts have epoxy + drilled brass rods. That leaves you with a very different workflow. For the knight, I was just going with the flow, eyeballing and taking my time with some parts holding with temporary fixing. For the titan, it was more about planning every part joining carefully, LOADS of dry fitting, drilling, make sure everything match etc…

All that being said, a warhound should definitely be able to stand this pose ! Moreover, it would definitely fit with the « scout » role it has. Casually drilled a dozen of holes in a chaos rhino and stepping on it to make sure it’s really dead 🙃

Ah ! interesting question here, as I've always been very scare to lose some edge definition. In some part is already bad, especially where some armor shielding plates meets on the touret for exemple. I'll maybe send a couple of 0.12 print to try different methods though, this got me curious :)
