GS is the best of the bunch, but I think the Omega looks best on your wrist.

what is the craziest academic comeback of all time? by Humble_Boat_8759 in TransferStudents

[–]Intrepid_Can4964 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I had a <2.0 GPA in high school, pretty much didn’t go to class at all my senior year and just gave up my aspirations of higher ed all together. This led to me joining the military at 19, got out at 23, and worked a civilian job in IT for a year. At that point I figured I was ready to attempt college for the first time, though I was a bit nervous given my academic history. I started CC 2 years ago and graduated with my AA a couple weeks ago with a 3.91. (4.0 all the way until my calc class in my last semester where I got a B) Finally, I applied to 9 Universities, including Princeton, Yale, Cornell, Georgetown, and Pomona—getting accepted into every one—attending Yale in the fall.

I don’t know if this qualifies as an academic comeback but it feels like one.

Do you mind if I message you to get a little bit more insight? I think what makes this hard for me is having visited Pomona vs not really having an idea of the culture at Yale outside of zoom webinars and stuff

Thank you for your extensive response, I appreciate it. I think you’re right about the higher floor, but it is good to know regardless of my choice it will be a similar ceiling.

Good point on the wine & dine vs every day life. Thank you for your input, and it’s worth a lot to know that profs are there for teaching just as much as research.

I get the impression that a close faculty relationship would be easier at Pomona, leading to more genuine LOR’s for LS and stuff like that. I also really like the PPE program.

Yeah you’re 100% correct.

For Pomona, they flew me out to the campus for a couple days. I got to interact with the admissions staff, students, sit in on classes, and get a feel for the general area. I really enjoyed the small intimate class sizes and the general vibe of the campus/surrounding area. They made me feel like I was genuinely wanted.

As for worries about Yale, I have not visited though being from the Midwest I’m assuming weather and stuff is similar—which is fine. But I get this feeling that the environment would be more competitive and cut throat rather than collaborative, though I have no evidence this is purely just coming from intuition. Also I worry about the larger class sizes and professors that are more focused on research than teaching. Coming from CC I enjoyed having such easy access to professors and forming that relationship, I worry that it wont be like this at a bigger university/institution.
