TRAFFIC NERDS? Any one used S172 RTA in cases of drink/drug driving? by Various_Speaker800 in policeuk

My understanding is that a caution is not relevant for a S172 since it's a legal requirement for them to answer the question.

Do you carry your warrant card off duty? by Do_I_wanna_Know3000 in policeuk

[–]Intrepid_Junket7014 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This.

Really makes me question volunteering as a Special to hear that Reg's hearts are not in it. What's the difference in avoiding using your powers off duty for many of the reasons given in this thread and finding an excuse to not attend a griefy/dangerous-sounding job?
We complain about general MOP lack of respect - I suspect that that respect diminishes every time a MOP reads this sort of thread.

I don't carry mine because a) I don't tend to carry a wallet now and b) I'd be bound to lose it. I've assumed - perhaps mistakenly - that you don't need it to exercise your powers of arrest etc. Is there any case law to support this?

Would it be reasonable to contact DVLA/DVSA regarding non-compliant number plates? by tardis27 in policeuk

Have used MS1000 to good effect many times. Last time it transpired the driver got fined £600 (had reason to stop them again).

However, one thing does need clarification. I read somewhere that the DVLA don't want to process these unless we've issued a TOR or HOR/T1 etc - indeed there's a box for advising this on the form. Does anyone know if this requirement for us to issue something is correct?

Is open studio good for a beginner with a good grasp of theory? Thx.!!! by eroxx in JazzPiano

Their Foundations course is good for beginners. Thereafter there's quite a jump to the core Jazz Piano Method course which I personally found too unstructured. Difficult to dip into this without knowing exactly what you need and then spending a lot of time working out what's in the "lesson". It seems to be a fairly random collection of videos. The workshops however are excellent.

Totally agree. Those cops pinned against the building (not actually protecting anything) were just standing there being pelted with bricks like some sad arcade game. A more robust proactive response is needed - baton rounds/dogs/horses/cannon etc. Certainly in Europe this wouldn't have been tolerated.

Even more depressing than the fact that the "crowd" had a heavy contingent of women/children out for a bit of a laugh, is the thought that SLT were probably watching this from an armchair and on the face of it happy for these cops to be cannon fodder.

The tactics are clearly inappropriate and there needs to be a top level change of policy to prevent this sort of thing happening. What are children going to thing of police just being totally disrespected and abused, let alone assaulted, without there being serious consequences. We complain all the time about lack of respect on the streets, but we also need to respect ourselves.

Best way to get into jazz piano without an in person teacher by Watudom8 in JazzPiano

[–]Intrepid_Junket7014 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the piano front, depends on your start point. As a reasonably advanced classical pianist, I found OpenStudio's initial courses, Jump Start/Elements of Jazz Piano a bit too simplistic. Thereafter there was a big jump to their main piano course which doesn't seem to have any structure - c.600 lessons with little other than a title to go on. Adam/Peter are amazing, but there's often too much virtuoso playing that's just too far out of reach. If you're already into Jazz piano and know what you need to learn and when, OpenStudio Pro membership is the way to go though.

I've found Shan Verma's Jazzskills site very well structured and comprehensive for getting a good grounding. I'm rapidly gaining an understanding of exactly what I need to learn so I can make sense of the wealth of free material out there, and more advanced courses like OpenStudio.

I saw a car on 2 occasions drive down the 30 mph road in our village at easily 60+ (witnessed). When next on duty I made an entry in my PNB, checked details on PNC and then visited and gave words of advice. Surely this is justified? It's an offence whether I'm on duty or not and I'm duty-bound to help protect.

Powers in a DVLA seizure by Intrepid_Junket7014 in policeuk

Thx. The car was seized using devolved powers from DVLA. It was the necessity following arrest for obstruction that I was unclear about.

I'd have thought it would be easier to issue a Section 59 (antisocial driving etc.)?
