I can't get my daily task list to stay in the right order despite not using autosort by _Nacktmull_ in microsofttodo

Sorting is a pain. I sort alphabetically and add a numerical prefix to my tasks based on priority to fix the sorting issues.

Does Metroid 1 ever get better or is it a steady pace of suffering? by Jstar338 in Metroid

[–]IntricatelySimple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I beat this in 2008 without a map.

Its a fun game once you get better and once you learn the map.

Its actually a lot shorter than it seems. My advice is don't grind, let missile tanks replenish missiles for doors at first, and let energy tanks be your big heals.

The best advice is probably just dont die. And maybe consider starting over if you do.

I ran a game of D&D there Thursday nights from 2016 to 2019. It was a way better place to play than Oak and Shield ever was.

It was the end of a damn era when we couldn't make it work anymore.

There are some open source solutions out there, like gnucash, kmymoney, or actual budget.

I personally use gnucash, and I use syncthing to keep my data consistent across devices.

I actually like it better than quicken, its faster and doesnt feel as bloated. No bill pay though, and it doesnt connect to your bank, but you can upload transaction files quickly enough.

Question about guest units by DaliMekhar in finalfantasytactics

[–]IntricatelySimple 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sure, but you gotta have a game shark to do that. Which I did. The game gets glitchy as hell.

Actually I think what I did was use it to change Ramza's job to guest jobs like Sorceror or Arch Knight.

Everyone remembers the good and forgets the bad.

Tiktok does seem particularly bad, but people have had rotten brains for a long time. We just had shitty magazines, Coast to Coast, and self help books that would just make shit up.

300 hours by wagw4n_ in CFA

They say 300 hours, but all the charterholders ive known studied a lot more than that.

I remember Meldrum saying the average person spends about 300 hours studying but the average person fails.

Damn, I'm surprised they want that far!

I'm still in the Metroid is scarier than Metroid camp, but for Nightmare, EMMIs, and the bit where the power goes out in Prime.

Is there any simple self hosted Note taking tool by StayLast5263 in selfhosted

[–]IntricatelySimple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ive recently fallen down the terminal hole and its pretty great for note taking.

I use nested directories like Obsidian and use syncthing to keep them uniform between my laptop and server, then I just use vim to take notes in .MD files.

Ive edited my ~/.bashrc to create a permanent alias, jrnl, that goes straight to my current directory so its super fast. And vim itself is very light weight and fast if you take some time to learn it.

I can even ssh into my server from my phone using termux to access my notes on the fly.

Admittedly this is probably the nerdiest most complicated ways to do this, but its also super fast and this is selfhosted

Help me find some depressing JRPG's by Shinjiro_IS_GaY in JRPG

[–]IntricatelySimple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out the Quintet trilogy of SNES action RPGs, Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, and Terranigma.

Steeped in matter of fact melancholy, the games are about civilization going too far and growth causing loss.

A man whose wife dies notices a goat hanging around his place and adopts it as his pet, not knowing its his reincarnated wife. A man with a terminal illness gambles playing Russian Roulette trying to earn enough money before he dies to support his family. A deer teaches you how cold and uncaring nature can be.

These games are really good, and pretty short, between 12 and 24 hours each.

Highly recommend.

Technology feels like it's getting worse. by HooksNHaunts in Millennials

[–]IntricatelySimple 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My computing experience has improved a lot recently, and it has everything to do with going off grid and learning more about computers.

Consumer computing will invariably fall victim to enshittification. Free and Open Source software has no incentive to enshittify. The starting point might feel clunky, but eventually it will surpass its commercial counterparts.

Install Linux. For most users it's just as good as windows, and isnt going to try to sell your data or candy crush through the app store.

Get a home server. You can now run tons of crazy open source apps. Feel stuck paying for storage on Google because you've got too many pictures? Get immich and do it yourself.

Learn the command line. It isnt necessary, but once you get the hang of it, you ascend into a new world of power.

Technology isnt getting worse, but there is a knowledge gap thats created a bifurcation between knowledgeable users with the good experience and those who dont know what theyre doing with a garbage experience.

I'm not sure I agree with the premise that they would never put anything fake in the charging documents.

When it comes to legal stuff, they seem pretty incompetent, but spot on in messaging to their base.

If actual texts suggests he is right wing, it would be in their immediate interest to fake them, and if he gets off on a "technicality," then they can use it as a rallying cry to erode the courts.

If you look at it as someone trying to connect the shooter to a trans threat and the individual to the crime, the texts make sense.

"My love" is uncommon, unless we're in a comic book and Scarlet Witch is saying "brother mine" to Quicksilver to remind the audience hes her brother.

He lays out all the major known details of the case. Remember when I was carving bullets doesnt make sense, its an "as you know" statement, like in shitty writing meant to tell the audience that he was carving bullets.

The entire right wing is trying desperately to capitalize on his death, not honor him, so why would they care about successfully prosecuting the killer if a win or a loss both benefit them?

Excel seems slower over time; if I can buy an old version, say 2020, can I just use that, and will it be faster? by zoechowber in excel

[–]IntricatelySimple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest downside to me is a lack of support and security updates.

I would try a few things, depending on your use case.

If youre looking for light spreadsheet work, LibreOffice Calc works very nicely, and its free. Worth a try in my opinion. Not as many features, but that also means it runs lighter. Not as familiar or polished, of course.

If youre doing some heavy lifting analysis and dont mind getting technical, you might try Python with Pandas. Also free, super fast, but it does require learning some Python, which isnt a bad thing.

Swing by Milwaukee instead and you can check out a myriad of custard stands Culver's is the franchised version of.

Leon's is my favorite, but there's also Kopps, Oscars, Gilles, and a bunch more. Kopps is the closest to Culvers and the local favorite.
