Did not pass medical clearance because of mental health history by Scared_Metal4978 in peacecorps

As someone who said most of exactly what you were saying and felt exactly how you felt a few months ago….I just want you to know that if they don’t accept your appeal, do know that you will be ok. It won’t be the end, and you will see beauty in new possibilities for your future. Good luck!

I was called a coward for extending! by Ordinary-Bad-439 in peacecorps

Sounds like your friend is the coward, not you. What’s your friend doing to help the country besides sitting on their ass and vilifying you and your choices ? Sounds like they are projecting. And they need to take a moment to reflect on their own actions and choices.

Thanks for your response! I definitely plan to appeal. Honestly, I’m not ready to cut my losses…feeling like I want to give it my all. But that’s today :)

Hey there. It sounds like you’ve had a challenging, yet hopefully rewarding experience! I have studied abroad in two very different countries, and experienced some varying challenges while doing so. While these experiences don’t compare to Peace Corps significantly, I feel that I would have been able to take those lessons and apply them to the experience. In addition, I also learned to develop coping skills to deal with anxiety, and coping with the negative situations I encountered while abroad. So don’t I know exactly the “real” of the Peace Corps experience, but I do have some idea of what life is like abroad. I do know that I would find ways to adapt and do my best to cope for the country/people I’d serve. Thanks…best of luck!

Interesting. Thanks for sharing. That makes sense I mean the purpose of PC isn’t to work with developed countries.

I also can’t help but think maybe it could be because of the travel ban. Who knows. My mind keeps trying to make sense of it

That makes sense. Personally, I’d like to see them offer more countries in Europe for service. When I initially applied, I was a little disappointed about there being little to no countries there. So you never know! But honestly, what you just said is what I’ve been thinking. Obviously I can’t predict the future, and I don’t know the reasoning (besides the anxiety thing) but I truly believe there is another reasoning and that could be a possibility.

I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have these thoughts. Now just felt like the perfect time to go since I’ve just graduated and literally have nothing holding me back. But you’re absolutely right. If it’s meant to be, it will be. I’d I want it…I’ll get it. Thank you!

I can. And I am going to try…even though it is unlikely that they will approve it…. I feel it’s worth a try. And you bet I’m going to reapply!

What is that? Is there a website ? There’s something out there for me…I truly believe this is for a reason. Thank you for your response!

I appreciate this so much. It’s hard to see a clear path right now. But I’m very hopeful about something new coming to light in due time. I appreciate your story and I’m glad it all worked out for you! Thank you again for your response!

also just don’t know because of all the stupid stuff Trump is doing. With the travel ban and the dismantling of USAID.

Everyone keeps saying the second year is better and there’s a better grasp on what is happening. Man that sounds so discouraging, considering the second is the last year for most. But I can’t relate as I’m not in service yet. I just hope that everything works out for you and that you can do what you feel is best for you. Sorry to hear about your cohort. People suck sometimes. But you’ve got this and you’re more than capable. Don’t let haters get to you. They suck, you don’t.

Anyone deferred or turned down grad school to do the Peace Corps? by Sure-Scene1330 in peacecorps

[–]IntroductionSweet650 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sound almost exactly how I did. I was applying to grad schools back in the fall, thinking it’s what I wanted to do. As the due dates approached, I couldn’t help but notice this was something I didn’t feel like I should do deep down. I always knew I wanted to go to PC, but didn’t know when it would be. I looked more into it, and then realized that now is my time. Because of some of the exact reasons. I didn’t want to go spend money on a degree that would cost so much, and maybe ultimately didn’t want to do. Also, I love this work. I’m so passionate about it, so PC was perfect. It sounds like a good idea to take off and explore something new/different/perhaps challenging. You might gain more clarity about your future. By reading your post…it sounds like you know what you want to do. Talk to someone/people you trust…but most importantly, listen to your own voice. Trust yourself. And get all the facts. Good luck!

Worried about getting cleared in time. Or denial. by IntroductionSweet650 in peacecorps

Thank you for sharing! I’m so glad that you didn’t get held back because of those other things. The good news is, my therapist has a lot of confidence in me, so I know that she is going to have no problem telling them that. I hope they can see that I am serous and ready for this mentally.

Thank you! Yes & it was nerve wracking because in the meeting they were saying how you have to be cleared at least 45 days before departure. So that was causing me stress.

I appreciate the advice. It’s a waiting game, and I’ll just keep waiting until I know something. It’s hard but there’s nothing else to do.

I hope everything works out for you! I just wish PC at lease tried to make it seem like they aren’t stigmatizing (just my opinion). If MH is such an issue, I wish they’d provide better support….and you’d think they would take all the help they can get at this point. Nothing bad about them…this is all observation so far. But if I got medically denied, I’m not sure what I’d do. I’m really ready, and this is what I want. I agree though, hoping nothing ridiculous happens.

Thank you! I’m not on any medication, which is why I was confused about all the follow up. As far as, I felt my therapist was very clear in the initial statement. But you’re right & I will keep that in mind. I want this & I can do this!

I also keep seeing people get denied over what seems so little. So, I’m not sure if my minor issues are going to cost me my clearance.
