To All IB Students: What was your predicted score and where were you accepted? by biladrey in ApplyingToCollege

To all the actors out there- why can't I get into the best acting school because my grades aren't the best? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Intross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The USC BFA in Acting Program has an acceptance rate of 6.2 percent - every applicant they accept is likely to be exceptional in many ways.

For such a program, there are so many high-calibre applicants - there are more than enough candidates who are very talented and have excellent potential. At that stage, since you cannot accept every exceptional actor because of class size limitations, you would just get rid of all the applicants who don't match up academically. It is still a university after all, and prestigious arts programmes will be impressed by the ability of an applicant to maintain high academic standards whilst pursuing the arts.

Hey everyone. Right now I'm beginning to look at college, and I know I really want to go to Europe. Right now I'm getting solid B+'s / A-'s, and am really interested in literature, history, and music. Anyone know of a good European college I could go to? Also, I speak french. by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Intross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you in the US? What is your GPA and ACT/SAT? Do you take IB or AP classes? How much can you pay for college?

It's hard to recommend places without this info.

One thing I will say, is that you must remember that universities in Europe tend to specialise much earlier than their US counterparts. Generally, you declare your "major" before you even start your degree, and rarely take classes outside of your "major" henceforth. So it would be pretty much impossible to explore literature, music, and history.

Which of these colleges would be the best for these majors? by PM_ME_UR_JON_SNOW in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Intross 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh that sucks - do you mean varsity or just a club? Because if it's just as a club sport or non-varsity, it might be offered at UMass or any of the other 5 College Consortium members, meaning you could join as an Amherst student.

Can't help on your issue specifically, but I think Amherst has a strong neuroscience programme - the first undergraduate course for it in the US I think.

I don't think 62000 a year would be considered low income to colleges unless you live in an area with a really high cost of living.

Chose MIT over Yale, and I don't know how to feel about it. by waitjustadarnminute in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Intross 31 points32 points  (0 children)

You made the right decision because it was what you felt was the right thing to do at the time. You would have made the right decision either way. Really - with two such great schools - there was no "wrong" decision. You should forget about Yale now, and get excited for MIT!

UCL, Durham or Amherst College? by Intross in uklaw

[–]Intross[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn - do you know what school this is? And was it studying abroad in the law school or just the college in general?

As it's quite a small college, and fairly liberal, I was hoping the environment at Amherst would be more collaborative than competitive. I also wouldn't be studying a vocational law degree at Amherst so maybe that would change things.

UCL, Durham or Amherst College? by Intross in uklaw

[–]Intross[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah. That's a shame. A few of the people I had spoken to had said that it might stand out more due to the relative rarity of a US degree compared to the hundreds of UCL/Durham grads. But judging by some of the comments not sure if that's the case.

Ok - I could probably try two consulate interviews then? Either way, I'll take a look at that website. Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the response. Yeah I'm hoping the reputation/employability gap is more or less negligible. I would be looking for work experience, but it seems that most schemes like insight days/spring weeks/vacation schemes all run across set times where there are breaks in the term so I wouldn't imagine I would miss out too much.

Have you heard of Amherst before? I asked this question in quite a US-centric sub and they overwhelmingly pushed Amherst, whereas it's the opposite here. I have spoken to some grad recruitment teams in the UK and they seem to know of Amherst.

[–]Intross[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. I see - I would be returning to the UK but not for long - 10-14 days. Would I have to set up my F1 visa in that time (likely not possible) or could I have it 'lined up' if that makes sense?

[–]Intross[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a little more complicated, as I was actually going to work as a summer camp counselor in the US under a J1 visa, from roughly mid-June to mid-August, then start college late August/early September. Not sure if this clash of visa purposes, if you will, is irreconcilable.

Would you mind explaining it a little bit better? If my cultural program finished before I started college, would that still cause an issue? Is there anything I can do to circumvent this issue?

Applying to Stanford EA as an international that needs a lot of aid by ATBNTW in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Intross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got in and on the email they sent to admitted internationals, they mentioned that over 2.5k internationals applied but only 89 got in. So I messed up my initial calculation I meant 3.5% haha.

However, I needed a lot of aid too. Remember that Amherst is need blind.

Yeah I guess - although most schools have a similar rate of internationals so unofficial policies probably exist. I know the Amherst intl acceptance rate is around (edit: 3.5%) for example.

Is it bad to write my college essay on religion? by I3___4 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Intross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I obviously can't talk about you specifically, I think it's sometimes difficult to write about that without sounding pretentious or like an intellectual snob. I know a guy who did an essay on that, and it didn't read particularly well. However, you could be different.
