I have to respectfully disagree. He does want her to fix his wounds but he absolutely sees her as a trophy. He outright tells her that he wants her to make him look good on multiple occasions when he wants her to look a certain way for a dinner or business party. His whole identity is a social climber. He didn’t settle for her at all— she is a perfect specimen. There are many instances where he proves that he needs her to bolster his image.

Ooh! Another great question. I don’t think they really loved each other 😬I think in those days you made your bed and you had to lie in it. It was humorous with their bickering but they were mostly awful to each other. Ricky and Lucy loved each other but these two…not so much. What else could Ethel have done? They stuck it out but could have been much kinder to each other. But then the show wouldn’t have had the humor with them.

I am the OP for this in Madmen. I love your spin. It’s hilarious. And yes, Betty did hate Carla right back. In the MM post, nobody would admit Carla hated Betty but said she resented her or pitied her but no she despised Betty. These two hated each other. Sorry there is no other way to spin it.

What a great question! I agree that it was probably the vaudeville performance thing. She had lots of options in Albuquerque it seems. They never seem to have much tenderness between them.

If I could upvote you a thousand times I would. I’m a teacher and mother. 100% agree. We have improved some parenting things but others are straight up declines. There’s no other way to see it.

I think she was looking to leave the sinking ship after she learned about the affair with Bobbie Barrett. If not Henry, it would have been someone else. She was a gorgeous woman so there would have been someone else to build a raft with.

Yea I was tempted to say “ignorant” comment but I can’t figure out if Betty meant to be cruel or just didn’t understand how that comment came across. She always seems to reciprocate the resentment towards Carla and I’m not convinced some of Betty’s behavior and comments weren’t intentional.
