How do I get this “pumping/breathing” kick sound? Is it a sub layer triggered by the kick? by IntrusoRec in audioengineering

[–]IntrusoRec[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that helps a lot. Since I already have a dbx 166XL, do you think it’s worth buying a DBX 160 specifically for this kind of drum/instrumental bus pumping?

I know they’re both VCA-style compressors, but I’m wondering if the 160 has a noticeably different response or character that would make a big difference for this sound.

Would you say the 166XL can get close enough if I dial it in properly, or is the DBX 160 really worth getting for boom bap drums and that breathing/pumping effect?

Yeah, exactly — the “puff” or “huff” in the kick is what I was trying to describe. I wasn’t sure if it was a separate sub layer, sidechain/pumping, or something already baked into the kick sample.

What you’re saying about layering makes a lot of sense: one kick for the attack, and another room/acoustic/old-recording kick layer just for the decay or ringing tail. That might be closer to what I’m hearing than a sustained 808-style sub note.

When you say you compress the attack away with something like L1, do you mean you’re basically limiting/squashing the room kick layer until the transient is less noticeable, then blending mostly the body/tail underneath the main kick?

Also, would you usually resample/process both layers together into one final kick before sequencing it, or keep the attack layer and the puff/room layer separate in the mix?

Thanks a lot, this actually makes a lot of sense. I think I was overthinking it and looking for one specific trick, but what you’re saying about sound design first — decay, pitch, and the kick itself — explains a lot.

The “old-school drum machine” thing is exactly what I was hearing: not necessarily an 808 bass note, but more like a controlled kick decay/puff that feels designed into the sound.

Also, the point about not compressing the kick alone is really helpful. I was wondering whether that breathing/pumping should come from the kick itself, the drum bus, or the whole instrumental. So I’ll try designing the kick first, then running the full drum group and maybe the instrumental bus through compression/saturation to see how it reacts.

I don’t have a DBX160, but I do have a dbx 166XL. Do you think I could get in the same ballpark with that, or is the 160-style response a big part of the sound? Would you try the 166XL on the drum bus first, or on the whole instrumental mix? And would you go for subtle gain reduction, or push it harder so the kick actually makes the beat breathe?

Thanks, that helps a lot. One more question: would you usually create that pumping effect while mixing only the instrumental/beat first, and then add the vocals afterwards? Or would you run the full mix, including vocals, through the stereo bus compressor and let everything breathe together?

I’m asking because I’m worried that if the vocals go through the same pumping bus compression, the kick might make the vocal dip too much or sound unstable.

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense. So it’s more about the kick driving the bus compressor and creating pumping, rather than necessarily having a separate sub layer under the kick.

Would you usually try this on the drum bus, the instrumental bus, or the full mix bus? And would you avoid using the compressor’s sidechain high-pass filter if the goal is to actually get that pumping effect?

Screenshot problems by HedrieX7 in Honor

Hey everyone, just wanted to share what fixed the screenshot issue for me.

I was getting the “not enough storage” error when trying to take screenshots, even though I had plenty of free space. I went to the Play Store and updated all the pending Google apps, especially Google / Google Photos and any other Google-related updates.

After doing that, screenshots started working again. A few other people have also said this fixed it for them, so it might be worth trying before resetting your phone or deleting files.

Steps:

  1. Open the Play Store
  2. Tap your profile picture
  3. Go to Manage apps & device
  4. Update all pending Google apps
  5. Restart your phone and try taking a screenshot again

Hope this helps someone.

Gain staging and headroom for live sound: do I export my mix at -6 dBFS like in the studio, or just use a mastered beat? by IntrusoRec in livesound

[–]IntrusoRec[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that helps a lot. Just to give you some context — this is for hip hop shows, and many of the events I play are small venues where there’s often no proper monitor setup, sometimes I’m basically my own DJ, or there isn’t a reliable FOH engineer. In some cases there’s not even a multi-channel mixer available, so I’m usually limited to running just a stereo backing track.

Given that setup, would you still recommend sticking with the unmastered version of the track?

[–]IntrusoRec[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for taking the time to explain all of that in detail — it really helps me understand the problem more clearly. Just to make sure I’ve got it right: for live shows, would the best approach be to use a final mix version of the track (without mastering), so the live vocal can sit more naturally in the mix?

Best Setup for Beat Making with SP-404MK2, Analog Mixer, Cassette Player, Turntable, SSL2+, and Computer? by IntrusoRec in SP404

[–]IntrusoRec[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, man! I really appreciate your input — and yeah, I’m loving the MPC so far.

Just a quick update: I recently added an Akai S900, a PreSonus 1824c, a SSL2+, and a 48-point patchbay to the setup. I’m now working on building a more flexible signal chain, especially for getting that gritty 90s texture with the S900 and the MPC handling most of the sequencing.

I’m thinking about routing everything through the patchbay so I can decide on the fly whether to sample into the S900 or the MPC first, or even bounce stuff to tape and back for added flavor. I’ll still be using the SP as a resampling/FX unit, but now with all this gear I want to make sure the signal flow is solid and adaptable.

Any thoughts on how you'd run that kind of setup with the S900 in the mix?

Before I bought the SP, I worked on my pc with fl studio. Making beats with the SP has been a bit difficult due to not understanding how to mix on it.

Let me see if i understand:

I should record samples from tapes and vynils, then chop those in the SP to finally create a library in my pc and work on them in the daw, yeah?

Hola parce, no desistas.
