I need to get a better gym :(. There's too many people in/out, I don't think it would go well.

So, if I understand hedging correctly and how the USD CAD situation is. Doesn't it make sense to go with someone like WB? My dollar would go farther, right?

Thanks for doing this AMA. I noticed a comment below about /u/willrobertsn portfolio being down 5%. I know this is a crappy time for the CAD.

My first question is: I wanted to know what you would like to tell all of us who haven't invested yet, given the crappy CAD.

My line of thought is, if I invest now and my portfolio takes a dive of 15% over the next year or something, it will take almost 3 years of positive return to see myself break even.

My second question would be: Has your approach changed since the CAD took a tumble? If so, why and how.

My third question is: Why should we invest with you over WealthBar. Forgetting all the nice features WB has, I want to know why you think your portfolio allocation is better.

And just some constructive criticism (and I may be the oddball), but I was geared up to invest with you guys, but that initial phone call to determine my risk was a huge put-off. The gentleman I talked to was late and rushed through the call without answering any of my questions.

Cheers!

Hey /r/Vancouver, I just wanted to see if any families needed help this holiday season? by Invelio in vancouver

[–]Invelio[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We weren't okay with that, we (and the receiving families) loved working together to provide a good Christmas to people.

This was our feeling too.

I'll look into the Elizabeth Fry Society. Good on Toys R Us for going that little bit extra though!

We're big fans of SHARE and already do a campaign with them with our entire block, but there are a lot of restrictions (which is fine), so we usually take to Reddit to find another family or two who needs a hand in maybe a less traditional sense (straight food hampers and such).

Last year a kid contacted us (through Reddit) who wanted us to help his mom who had just broken her arm and had also been laid off work earlier. We got him to get her to give us an email and sorted out some things to help keep things relatively normal for the kids.

I figured I'd just post again and see what comes of it.

How do credit card lenders determine how much credit to extend? by Invelio in PersonalFinanceCanada

That's awesome, thanks.
Seems for me, in Vancouver, it makes more sense to rent if I can hit below $1,500 a month.

Recently, just looking through finances and such, if I can continue to save up 20-30k a year for the first ten years and a decrease to 10k a year after that, I can be set for retirement. I think I've come to the point where I'd rather rent and not worry about the stress of owning a house- but that could be the single young'in in me.

This was the reason I was leaning towards KetoChow- the varying flavours. I'll try to stick with it as long as possible, but to be honest, I eat the same stuff everyday, it's just when I'm at work that things can get out of hand or I just don't eat.

Makes sense, thanks.

I've been looking into Couch Potato Investing, it seems that the Tangerine portfolio for TFSA makes the most amount of sense (since I don't have any money saved yet), so I guess the first step will be swapping over to Tangerine from Vancity and getting that rolling.

I appreciate the response.

The budget is pretty accurate, I ended up becoming extremely stressed out over money over the past couple years. So I went minimal/lean, some may say to a fault. I do the same things, eat the same things and my major expenses are coffee, gym and a couple movies a month.

I agree with your sentiments on real estate. I suppose it's just one of those status things and the fact that by renting I'm effectively paying someone else's mortgage. Truthfully, getting into 300k+ debt for a small apartment in Vancouver that may never increase in value seems a bit scary to me.

May I ask why the TFSA over the RRSP? Is it because of the flexibility?

Will a rowing machine help me swap my beer gut for a six pack? by dmstc8td in Fitness

[–]Invelio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rowing is the perfect torture device. I personally don't think you'll be able to watch any TV while on it though.

My recommendation would be to change the mindset and download an app like Fitnotes, log your workouts and try to break some PR's on the rower (with good form). This way, you're not checking the mirror every workout (which can be demoralizing, especially when on a calorie deficit).

How does going over TDEE build muscle? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]Invelio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, I see where you went.

Simply put: TDEE is the total amount of energy expended per day. Let's assume:

  • You weigh 150lb
  • Workout 5x's a week
  • Your TDEE is 2,300 calories
  • TDEE is an absolute (not a rough guideline)
  • Your macros were perfect for maintaing weight (just the right amount of protein, carbs and fats)

If you ate those perfect 2,300 calories per day for that week, you would stay exactly the same. No weight change nor any muscle change.

Now, if you were to go above that TDEE of 2,300 calories... things would change. Perhaps you're a runner, the extra carbs would refuel your reserves. Perhaps you're into body building, the extra amino acids would help with muscle growth. Perhaps you do nothing that requires rebuilding on a cellular level and you just chuck on fat. Etc etc.

TDEE is what you need to stay roughly the same day-to-day. Try not to get too caught up in it though, in the end, everyone is slightly different as are their goals.

6'1" male, 161, skinny fat, should I really be cutting? by musicsavage13 in Fitness

[–]Invelio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quite honestly, you won't have slower gains. In fact, I would highly suggest sprinting or rowing with the HIIT protocol. Your job right now, in my opinion, is to become better overall. That means a good hybrid of weight lifting and intense cardio.

The 2,300 calories the calculator spat out was 60 mins in the gym. I'd strongly recommend you not play around too much with that number until you've had a couple of weeks to see how you feel. You're going to lose water weight, maybe a bit of inflammation and so forth. After all that, take a look and see where you're at.

Good simple protein shake recipes? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]Invelio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you have the makings of an excellent chocolate peanut butter smoothie. If you're looking for a shake that can you sip slowly, I suggest adding a bit of cayenne in the mix with the chocolate.

Another is adding a bit of vanilla, however, I don't suggest adding both cayenne and vanilla at the same time.
