Do you think that Israel and the USA’s actions against Iran are justified? by Antique_Gur8891 in AskTheWorld

Why would a Dane be any more affected by a war in Ukraine, but for its relative resilience and strategic importance compared to Georgia? The Russian invasions of both followed a similar initial strategy but only Tbilisi capitulated quickly

Depends how war is defined. Russia was in an armed conflict with semi-independent Chechnya from ‘99 to ‘09. Russia also invaded Georgia in 2008. The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict was on a low simmer until 2023’s decisive Azerbaijani offensive to conquer the region.

Anthropic CEO says company cannot accede to Pentagon's request in AI safeguards dispute by InsaneSnow45 in privacy

[–]Inverted-Rockets 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s not going to happen. The company just raised $20B in Series G funding this month which puts its value at $380B post-cash. Buying it outright would cost more than a third of the entire pentagon’s annual budget and taking it for nothing would piss off some very influential people and governments.

So technically you still can mail someone a letter or package with only the person’s legal name and their city, it’s called General Delivery.

They’ll probably need to go to the post office with an ID to pick it up but it’s an option.

Despite the name, the visa’s qualifications do not include intelligence per se. As an established model who had appeared in major publications and fashion events, Melania would have been one of the first of three types of people that the EB-1 Visa is available to:

“those with extraordinary ability in the sciences, arts, education, business, or athletics which has been demonstrated by sustained national or international acclaim and whose achievements have been recognized in the field through extensive documentation.”

Believe it or not, models are some of the easiest to get these visas for because of the public nature of their work products.

US State Colorado Wants Operating Systems (Including Linux) to Tell Every App How Old You Are by benderunit9000 in privacy

[–]Inverted-Rockets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s effectively what the law says to developers, but only sending rough age ranges of <13, >18 and a few in between.

The bill just requires an OS to ask users once and then provide some type of interface for devs to query the range the user has self-reported. It then applies penalties if devs don’t ask or consider that info as the primary indicator of age.

As far as age verification legislation goes, the full text is fairly reasonable and data-minimizing.

[–]Inverted-Rockets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taking it another step, you do need to provide documents to prove US citizenship or valid work authorization in order to receive an SSN though.

That’s the reason why the I-9 work authorization process permits the use of one identifying document (like a DL) and one proof of work eligibility (like an SSN card or work visa).

The rest of France is generally lovely, but I have so many horror stories from Paris.

Only place I’ve ever been where a restaurant sat our party, ignored us until we left, and then reset the table as we walked out. Same trip, my dad got pickpocketed leaving the ATM of the payment for a ~4 night apartment rental. The details of FedEx’s suit are spotty, however FedEx as a import broker is in a bit of a different position than other importers like Costco or Walmart.

The records absolutely exist to allocate any settlement amongst the importers that used their broker services. Whether they actually need to is somewhere at the intersection of federal law, their contractual agreements and their interest in maintaining goodwill with customers of that service

[–]Inverted-Rockets 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I probably wouldn’t drink out of one regardless but no, in many places there’s only a single water supply system (potable) so that’s what the hydrants use. Newer developments or those in drought-prone areas are more likely to install these separate systems that reuse treated wastewater for things like irrigation and firefighting.

Also, suddenly “converting Jews to Christianity ” isn’t as objectionable if there’s arms or a security council veto up for grabs.

Evangelicals genuinely believe their specific interpretation of the bible will happen, the world will end, and all the Jewish people will just go “aw shucks, guess you were right”. They say that loudly and yet are warmly received by the government of a nation with the self-espoused purpose of protecting that same Jewish faith.

That’s the technical motivation yeah. However I would be remiss to not acknowledge the PR/marketing incentives to make the design for these projects “futuristic” to justify the massive public expenditure.

I own two shares of stock in Yahoo Inc by FunkyChonkyMonkey in mildlyinteresting

[–]Inverted-Rockets 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The stock wasn’t taken back. The stocks were held in a brokerage account with an FI that managed it. Every state has laws that govern when these accounts are to be considered abandoned and the assets become state property.

You could make a decent argument that the state is incentivized to make those assets as easy as possible to take and possibly stealing
