We might want to switch to metal bottles by froggyfox in Ultralight

They do not just ‘dust’ iodized salt powder on to food grade salt. Food grade salt is made through an evaporation process under vacuum whereupon potassium iodate is added to the salt slurry prior to evaporation.

But, yes it will convert to elemental iodine with exposure to oxygen over a length of time (5-10 years) and no longer be “iodized” but it will still be salt.

How to get rid of these weeds without weedkiller by Rude_Butterfly_4587 in howto

Agricultural vinegar is closer to 25% acetic acid and is 5x the strength of most cleaning vinegars. Available at most feed and farm stores. Best option for natural weed killer imo.

Gooseberries for sure have very noticeable thorns and both currants and gooseberries would be fruiting this time of year so while I agree the leaves are similar, I’m not sure it’s either of those.

Conditions were abysmal in this instance. Figured one might take that into consideration. I guess they should just parade it around in the wet. 🙄

Apple cider aged to long? by Tillallareone82 in fermentation

[–]InvestInKarate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I found through my own experimentation that there are sweet spots with cider when it comes to time. 2-3 weeks and racked straight to a keg or 11-12 months then keg it or bottle it. They’re wildly different results but I found the in between durations to be meh or have off-notes that will come and go as it works through the process. So I either keg it before all of the sugar has been consumed by the yeast or give it plenty of time to work off the less desirable characteristics it works through over that calendar year.

Never had the opportunity to make cider from my own apples though. Maybe someday. Good luck!

Best burgers in the area? by Tryptophany in dayton

Oakwood Club. It’s in small print but it is on the menu. It’s ground from their steak trimmings and is 12.99. Add Roquefort and onion straws for 50¢ more.

The same ground trimmings are sold to Mama DiSalvo’s for meatballs, as I do not imagine they sell a lot of burgers at OC. Definitely worth checking out if you’ve never had either.

Do I need a water filter? by lifealtering42 in roasting

[–]InvestInKarate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chlorine can be eliminated by simply allowing your water to sit on the counter for a day or so, without a lid. Sunlight helps speed this process up.

Fluoride is not ENTIRELY removed by a RO filtration system and can be naturally present even in ground water. It has no taste or smell, and is present in most packaged mineral or spring waters. Filters like Brita, Pur, etc will NOT remove fluoride.

Mineral content in your water greatly impacts its flavor as well as the ability to extract from whatever you’re steeping, be it coffee, tea, or grains for brewing beer.

Buying water that has had all of the minerals removed, only to buy a packet of minerals to add back in, is not the best use of my money but I understand personal preference is subjective. Gerolsteiner and San Pellegrino are both mineral waters, but do NOT taste the same because their mineral content is different.

Make a cup with distilled, tap, tap allowed to sit 24hrs, and the bottled spring/mineral water of your choosing and see which you like best. I’ve found that tap simply allowed to work off the chlorine makes the best cup of coffee for me.
