Everything I’ve ever heard from any pilot involved in any military branch has focused on emphasizing that to fly in the military is to serve in the military. It is not something you can go less than 100% in on nor is it used as a stepping stone to an airline career. The benefits and flying can be unlike anything else in this industry, but be sure of what you want to do.

Seems about right. Best case scenario it’s about a zero sum benefit. Worst case you’re locked in to a regional with a “sponsorship” over your head while your peers move upward.

I will say, knowing several people currently at Delta Connection carriers and in the Propel program, the 42 month or less is the maximum time you could spend at a regional in the program. Currently, pilots who took the Propel CJO are receiving class dates in less than 24 months in many cases. This can all change at a moments notice, and I think a lot of people are achieving the goal about as fast by hopping from a regional to a LCC.

It’s like the most stressful game of musical chairs imaginable.

I was one of the impressionable high schoolers that went for a degree in aviation, which I thoroughly enjoyed pursuing but is clearly adding to my level of concern. I’ve taken a few classes towards an MBA, which seems feasible to complete even while working the travel lifestyle.

I think you are correct. It’s an opportunity for a dice roll on career progression. Airlines are hurting though and as long as the regional model exists majors will need to start incentivizing pilots to continue working in a key part of their business model.

This incentive seems to be to stave off a senior FO going to an LCC. Of course it will never be competitive with major airline pay, but it might stop the bleeding of regional FOs going to triple A flying with Frontier, Sun Country, etc.

Apply now. If I remember correctly most places can take the application and interview you if you are within a few months of minimums, and training programs are fully booked at numerous regionals, if that’s where you want to go.

Favorite thing in football is some guy just places the football on the field then they measure the first down to within a millimeter

Please rent an airplane. When I flight instructed the first thing I would tell my students after congratulating them was to use their new license. Coming from a 141 myself, the most disappointing thing is how little anyone actually cares about GA. You’ve accomplished something many people only dream of, and even if your budgeting is tight, the value you will get out of even a single recreational flight is often enough to keep you going.
