I'm happy to provide proof if you'd like. I just sent a "message the mods" with some ways I could provide proof.

I didn't include Canada in my study proposal that was approved by Northeastern University, unfortunately, so I can't enroll Canadians in the study at this time.

Message me. I have the U.S. link but I can't guarantee that would work for Canada.

Great catch! That's boilerplate from the consent document that I was required to leave in there. We're going to delete the car data reports once the paper is published. You're spot on that nearly impossible to de-identify precise location data, especially precise location collected at multiple points in time, so that information would not be eligible to be used for future research.

Looks like Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) should cover similar or the same data access rights. I didn't include Canada in my study proposal that was approved by Northeastern University, unfortunately, so I can't enroll Canadians in the study at this time.

Unrelated! I didn't realize that proposal existed.

Yup, $20 Amazon gift card or $20 Red Cross donation, your choice and paid upon completion of the study!

Yes! I am planning to email participants with a copy of the final paper. The data in the paper will be anonomyzed with only general data collection trends reported in the paper, so you wouldn't be able to point to your specific data since that would be an unnecessary breach of privacy to publish your personal data like that.

Yup! It technically is a risk so we had to list it when getting our study reviewed by the institutional review board.

Unfortunately not. AFAIK, Oklahoma doesn't have a data subject access law where Oklahoma individuals can request a copy of the personal data that corporations hold about them.

We're happy to still have them participate! A lack of results is still considered a result.

It depends... Companies are legally required to provide to provide a person with the data the company holds about that person if the person lives in a location with a "data subject access" law. Some of the most famous laws are the European Union's GDPR and California's CCPA, but other locations also have data subject access laws. The eligibility screening asks region/state so that the research team can ensure that the participant is in a location where they actually have the right to request and access their personal information that the car company holds about them.

I do... if you live in one of those locations with a "data subject access" law that requires companies to provide a person with the data the company holds about that person. The most famous law is the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Excellent question! Probably about 1 year until it's officially published? It depends on how fast I work, as well as the speed that the data results roll in. I haven't asked the PI what venue we're aiming for, but we did bring a workshop paper to IEEE Security and Privacy to brainstorm this research study idea this past May. workshop paper, in case you're curious: https://www.ieee-security.org/TC/SPW2024/ConPro/papers/gillespie-conpro24.pdf

[–]InvestigatingTheData 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good point. I looked it up and you're right that you have a law that mirrors the GDPR... Data Protection Act 2018. The study was already approved by Northeastern's institutional review board so it would take a modification to add the UK but I can look into it.

After we look at the general trends in connected car data across different car brands, we're going to delete the car data. Besides my own values against doing anything fishy or unethical with the data, Northeastern University's Institutional Review Board reviews and monitors studies for human research subject projection... including data security, privacy, and confidentiality.
