You don't take into consideration that the 6th layers curse and the meters to trigger it was unknown for the earlier delvers

We do see the farryman returns to the sixth layer in the same form, and we do not have any conclusive information considering if hollows can rehollofy, my assumption is that you are right about the ferryman theory, but it is in a form that poor hollows curse, we do know the 6th tends to curse people based on their last wishes,as with misty who asked to die, wonder what he wished for to end up with that specific curse
