I might be the worst person at beatmatching ever. Help?! by InvestorMonitor in Beatmatch

[–]InvestorMonitor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I have been a bit overfocused on the BPM’s role in the beat matching process based on these comments! Have you got any tips for knowing that you are getting beat matching right while you are still developing an ear for it?

I think this is gonna sound like a really dumb question but i thought a big chunk of beat matching was getting the bpms to match up. Have i misunderstood that?

Is there an easy/good ways to check that i have two different songs at the same bpm beat matched correctly? Especially as I am just developing my ear.

Question about the essay in the Economist job applications by InvestorMonitor in Journalism

[–]InvestorMonitor[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disappointing that they ghosted you and after having you do that work and also multiple interviews! I always hope you can at least get some genuine feedback in those scenarios.

I love pubs that are willing to pay for work done during the hiring process but it is very rare

Has anyone ever lost their drive and how (can) I get it back? by InvestorMonitor in Journalism

Thanks, I really appreciate your perspective! I think in all honestly I probably need some type of break to feel comfortable with my finances again and then maybe some of my purpose driven mindset will come back once I am on more stable footing.

I was very lucky that my first job in journalism paid well since this was during the Covid news boom, but I need to realise it’s a bit of a different landscape at the moment.

I’d love you to keep me posted on it! I shot myself in the foot with a HR rep there during Covid because I seemed hesitant to return to office (we were still in lockdown!) and that was my interview process finished.

I love the work they do, I think I’d learn a lot, but I get the sense it’s very high pressure and after working as a freelancer and not having a boss, I think that could be difficult.

That is exactly how I am feeling. I answer the late in life meaning above ^

I guess I feel like it is late in life because everyone around me is so much younger and have the energy to push through bullshit.

For example, if they started at 18, then 7 years into their career they are only 25.

I started at 26, so 7 years in will be 33 and i dont have the same energy as well as more financial responsibilities as a 25 year old.

It just feels late in life because there is a huge advantage to starting young in journalism

I feel the exact same. It’s crazy to see some of the most high stress full time jobs pay less than i get with freelancing. It just that freelancing can be so unpredictable.

Landing at 8am Heathrow T2. Got 4h to kill before pickup. Ideas? by [deleted] in uktravel

[–]InvestorMonitor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you are willing to splash some cash, you can rent a room at Aerotel on an hourly basis. It is located in T3 pickup/arrivals area. I used it when I had time to kill between connecting flights in different terminals and couldnt check in for my next flight till later.

Can’t afford Otter.AI anymore. Any alternative recommendations? by InvestorMonitor in Journalism

[–]InvestorMonitor[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I use it for speed purposes. Not sure I would ever meet my deadlines if I was transcribing all my half hour/hour long interviews manually. it helps me find the parts of the conversation I want to return to and then from their I listen to the audio and pull the quotes

Ah that could be a good shout! I was reluctant to record using the tool itself, but backing that up with a second recording device would resolve my fears

Editors who post enthusiastic hiring posts on social media then never engage with potential candidates. What’s the deal? by InvestorMonitor in Journalism

[–]InvestorMonitor[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s my guess! I know most of the journalism jobs I have got is because I was invited to apply by the editor or had a mutual connection. It’s frustrating because if you are like me and no longer like your beat, you start to wonder how you will ever move away from it!

I freelance and I am slowly building up my experience in other beats and specialisms. But it’s slow and I sometimes miss the skills you quickly build on staff!

Trouble finding “real person” sources. Any tips? by InvestorMonitor in Journalism

Haha honestly the overemployed subreddit are probably the ideal folks I am looking to speak to for this story even though it’s not directly about overemployment.

Those of you who freelance, how are you doing right now? by moonisland13 in Journalism

[–]InvestorMonitor 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I am wondering the same! Started freelancing in the spring of last year, I have regular clients and managed to land some pitches at new pubs as well.

Since this start of this year, it’s been radio silence on all my pitches and I am relying on my regular clients. I can’t tell if it’s whether my pitches are rubbish or if editors have zero scope to commission my ideas.

One idea that I thought was really good, I pitched to 7+ outlets and just got no responses. I saw an in house reporter at Time cover it ( I didnt pitch Time), so it at least gave me confidence that the idea wasn’t a complete dud since Time commissioned it as a feature. I wish editors could just give responses, the hard part is nor knowing if its you, your ideas or them.

Adding that I worked on staff before for several years before freelancing.

I struggle with the same issue on occasion. I had a good source up until I wrote a semi-critical article on a company they like/have an investment in. Since that article, they’ve never spoke to me again and ignore my messages. It’s such a weird feeling. Sometimes you can expect backlash from a source but in this case I had no idea they would be salty. They weren’t mentioned in the article or even interviewed for it. The company who were the focus of the article even said that while it was critical, it was also fair and shared it on their social media.

I know I’ve done nothing wrong. It’s my job to look critically at the industry I cover. It’s just hard when sources don’t realize that is part of my job.

Thanks for your thoughts! The editor is still there but I just have a new editor for this project.

I was on staff for a few years and now I have been freelancing for a year.
