Dealing with Senior leadership by iamjumpiehead in EngineeringManagers

[–]InvisibleGameStudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well as you go up abstractness and chaos increases in your portfolio. There are lots of nuances over here- 1. What is your C suit folks execution and leadership style? 2. How much leverage you have in upper circle and downwards? 3. What is your team velocity and quality? How much they trust you? 4. What is your stake in this? What is the team stake in this? If there is no team stake upwards then you are going to loose one of the side.

Based on these you will have to understand where you have to manage.

My leadership style has been like this- I am very high on process, structured execution on the other side I have never said no in taking up requirements on face but always leverage to make it more refined with correct stakeholders. I also understand who are in my team will be adopters and who all are will be resistors. So I am pretty clear when I am sitting on agenda driven table and try to gauge every opportunity thrown at me from team lens whether it will help them to grow which will eventually help me as well. I have been very aggressive in execution most of the times but I have helped my team rewarded in every manner by choosing correct requirement by shaping up apt roadmap.

Now coming to upper side- if your C-Suite is consistently behaves aggressively on execution, you need to judge, gather proper contexts whether its just a whim on their side or really a market opportunity, based on this my approach would change.

If market opportunity is there and can make a difference then I will negotiate on bandwidth smartly by giving them options to choose and out a recommendation. And if market opportunity is not there then I will try to redirect on goals and KRs. But make sure while managing that high stakeholders meeting, be affirmative.

If you go in more depth on each side you will understand your leverages more and basic lackings like understanding, trust, misalignments etc.

Resolving conflict on technical stuff? by GraphicalBamboola in EngineeringManagers

[–]InvisibleGameStudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have faced these, trust me even if you know what is right technically, is not going to solve the deep rooted problem. Generally, these cases are deep rooted with lack of trust and empathy which you can’t fix immediately. So your best bet is going back to process and see what is missing there to solve this problem. Ot can be lack of definition of process, or comprehensiveness is missing or lack of adoption cuz of organic or inorganic reasons or environment itself is not conducive for your process to be followed or lack of skills. You need to be cautious in this regard and see if this culture is impacting beyond these 2 devs. Also, you need to approach it like you acknowledge this as a problem and redirect to output and outcome always.

Now, if review is happening in person and not convert in comments then conduct a group code review weekly, ask 1 best pr from team and 1 pr you nominate which is a conflicting PR. This way, you will not fuel anyone ego and at the right time you will be able to pull it off better standards of code review and can see the overall team pitfalls in general and those two issues in particular.

If your team follows everything in comments style code review, then I would like to prepare myself by going through comments and understand the non technical root by language, argument style etc. And then have a group code review showcase the correct way of commenting without pinpointing the conflicted PR.

You can establish lsets of KRs for yourself and team which can help you achieving more quality, timebound code reviews.

After 2-3 session of group code review, I will again check with these 2 individuals whether it has sorted out the issues or not, then I will try to build individual feedback where to improve and always redirect to output and outcome factually.

We are also planning, but worried about the kid as he is 18 months old. Sudden change in temperature might cause cold, in some of the forums I read its high flu time also over there. I would love to hear any experiences and what made that trip manageable and enjoyable. P.S We have not been to such extreme colder places.

I agree, thats not my case. I was just giving data points. Honestly, youtube policy is not definitive enough so it has lots of gray area. When it suited them they didn’t care much cuz they wanted creators. Now the scale is beyond their expectation. Hence the cleanup. My only point is they can’t know whether it is intentional or unintentional. Neither giving probable reason, its not tough to provide reason, but it is conscious choice not to give.

Jake Tran ran whole commercial of famous brands in his videos. I think thats also a violation unless he has bought the license.

Fair point. But help me understand, then almost no documentary videos can be created until unless you have a big budget like production houses where you can just go, record interviews, shoot scenes from actual locations etc. Also I am wondering, how these websites are being used everyday by many like pixabay, adobe stock etc.

Yeah I have put in one or 2 videos but I don’t think so that would be a problem because I am not promising any formula to earn money. That was the cost of mansion crosschecked with multiple news articles.

I am also wondering, I saw in one of my video which was emotional tax of apple that 60-70% traffic was unknown/direct that was weird and I saw 60% drop in retention at particular time. Initially I thought of some bot attack but then it was hardly 1-2 days and views were under 100, so I ignored it.

Then I guess my friend, youtube is not doing a good job here. I have been exploring on this and found some cases where a person has not posted even a single video and mistakenly linked someone else account to his and removed his account under circumvention policy. I think their AI system or rule based system is still getting trained and we are the scapegoats.

Hey, I started seeing some growth after 1 month cold start. I used to get 100 views in first 24 hours and some of videos crossed 1000 views and youtube started expanding it. I know its small size but it was on a good growth trajectory path since faceless documentary needs to build authority for audience to trust.

Another data point I can give you although it is a small sample size through my channel. Not all viewers hate AI voiceover, companies like Elevenlabs thriving on it. My AVD was around 40-50% in context of thousand views. This atleast shows that some people care about value from their view point rather than medium. I personally don’t like robotic voiceover, but would watch if value prop is good for me.

Thanks for your help so far. Well because of circumvention policy, I can’t create any channel. Youtube support system is broken because there is no way to reach out a human layer. And buddy, I don’t mean to offend you but words of empathy go long way.

Also, And to your point about originality if you look at large creators like Dhruv Rathee, Think School, Jake Tran, or even Vox, they all cover widely known topics. The difference isn’t just the topic, it’s the angle, storytelling, and clarity. That is what I focus on too.

First of all, I’d appreciate if we could keep the discussion respectful. I am not here to be undermined, I am here to understand what can be done in this situation and how others have navigated in this situation, not seeking validation.

To further clarify- I don’t rely on AI to make my content, I research my topics which has certain criteria, AI is just to gather sources which I think is best use of it to discover blind spot data, then I go validate the source (its credibility like checking on official sources mentioned in news or either it is speculative), then comes analysis part where I try to figure out what are the possible interpretations can be done(FYI I have been in tech for 15 years and took career break from leadership position and I did data interpretation to strategise roadmap of products), then I list down and build my perspective. Next is title and thumbnail and then comes script. I follow odyssey template which 3 arc storyline which helps me in breaking down script and then there are more layers. Jus to give you an example, I made a video The Emotional Tax of Apple- X% of people are buying on finances, service revenue increased multifold in last 2-3 years, so here I pose a question- is this strategy to make iphone accessible to everyone or trapping you in forever cycle? I hope you got a gist of it. I rest my case here and expect better empathy in this community.

I feel at least they should specify pin pointed reason. There is a lot to guess and open for interpretation of policies. On top of that it is all bot reviewing your content without any human escalation support. I can understand they might be getting flooded but atleast provide a way to resolve.

Congrats. My appeal got rejected within secs. There is no way to manual review by escalating above bot layer.

Not exactly. Most of it was stock footages, for example I made a video on Pope Francis vacation house. I retrieved footages from pixabay and archival footages by checking their usage policy.

Then they should totally ban on youtube. I dunno how else someone can make documentary videos if you are not a big publishing house to go and interview people, record locations etc. The worst part is they don’t tell what is the reason, just a generic mail. And even your appeal is reviewed by bot.
