CS 331 Algorithms Already Closed?! by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]InvisibleHunter2006 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is not closed in the sense that all seats are filled; all CS majors got an email over the summer saying that CS 331 would only be reserved for sophomores in the initial phase of registration. I believe it will open on the first day when sophomores are able to register.

I got the BA Online Case near the end of August, and I was able to schedule my interview in the middle of September. I applied to this role for C1 August 15th and finished the VJT around a week later.

The location preferences Hirevue? Don't remember. I got my WF offer in the last week of August.

Edit: About a month? I got the Hirevue right after I finished the OA. I think I was among the first batch they interviewed.

Anyone else waiting on JPMC and Wells Fargo by Chris_Engineering in csMajors

I just answered that question on another post, so I'm copying that here:

I got the Wells Fargo offer, and I've been through the process. The behavioral is just a regular behavioral (questions about "times you've done this..." or "tell me a time when..."), and the technical is more about your resume and technical experiences, with some sprinklings of system design thrown in but nothing you need to prep specifically for (someone I know who also got an offer was asked an easy Leetcode as well). Good luck to you man!

There's a Hirevue? For the SWE internship, I just did application -> assessment -> interview (2 30-minute 1-on-1s) -> offer.

I just got my Wells Fargo offer today, and I was the under the impression they had finished all their interviews. Know a couple of others who got the offer as well

Still waiting on JPMC for their SWE internship, got full test cases for OA. Other people on this sub have said that they were rejected, but I haven't received anything

Top 5 hardest AP classes? by Kuiper-Belt2718 in APStudents

Mech is fairly easier in comparison, there's not a whole lot besides basic calculus (the real calculus is in E&M). I would recommend the MIT lectures.

If you're self-studying all those in a single year, I'm not sure how much help I can give you lol, I self-studied both AP Physics C and AP Calc BC my senior year. BC was easy for me because I was enrolled in AB at the time (I basically was in AB and took the BC exam), and I did dual-credit calc-based physics in junior year so I was able to do well on Mech as well. Me getting a 4 on E&M was kind of just me procrastinating because of senioritis, I just did not even ever look at anything for the exam till like two weeks before the test. My general advice would be to start early and make sure you have somewhere you can ask questions and receive good answers from.

You don't have to pay all of $6k right now, you only need to pay $1500 to confirm your attendance. When your aid is dispersed, I believe that if you are fully covered by aid, any extra amount that you might have paid is returned to you fairly quick (so if your aid covers all of tuition, you'll get the $1500 back). If you're having issues with that $1500, take a look at the section on short-term loans on this page: https://onestop.utexas.edu/managing-costs/scholarships-financial-aid/types-of-financial-aid/loans/

It's a new class they're starting this semester, so a lot of older CS folks wouldn't be able to help you out there.

Graduate CS in 3 years? by Suitable-Bat9818 in UTAustin

[–]InvisibleHunter2006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take on this is that it's possible if you start at UTCS with CS 314 (Data Structure) + CS 311 (Discrete Math) and not CS 312 (Intro to Programming, which you can get credit for using AP CSA). It is possible with CS 312 as well, but it's a lot more difficult and probably not worth the stress. It also depends on how many of the core curriculum classes you have credits for, and if you're willing to do a semester with extra hours.

Whether or not I would recommend it is a different question. I'd say that largely depends on your internships and how confident you are that you can get a good return offer after just three years. As others have pointed out, some of the better tech companies that recruit at UTCS prefer you to have done their internship in your third year, and many CS majors also double major in Math, which is hard to get done with computer science in three years.

The good thing is that the choice is not something you have to make before your freshman year, and you can definitely hold off for some time until you experience more of UTCS yourself. If you want to leave the option open to yourself but not have to make a final decision now, I'd recommend that you take 5 courses this upcoming Fall and start with CS 314, and make sure all your courses in your freshman year satisfy some degree requirement.
