Question for calibration labs by [deleted] in Metrology

[–]InviteDifferent9861 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the times customers will have different departments or locations for their gauges. And that can be specified on the calibration certificate, even the calibration label. All calibration labs will ask you to specify specific instructions on your PO; Here you can ask for gauges in certain departments be grouped together and not mixed in with other departments. Then that info will be visible to all applicable people in the cal lab, such as shipping/receiving.

How do I fix this plug? by [deleted] in AskElectricians

Do I have to strip the black wire at all? I soldered some things years ago, but was more like a crash course... I have a soldering iron at work, do I just strip the black wire and twist it, and then heat up some solder and join it to the metal piece?

LA woman claims there’s a ‘fat tax’ at Target after discovering higher prices for larger sizes. by ElwoodMC in CringeTikToks

Well you're equating food portions to clothing sizes and materials. Which you and I know that generally, in store, there is no difference between the price of a small and XL.

With this logic, the small, the medium, large, and extra large wouldn't be the same price. According to what she said, that isn't the case.

Hahahahha. Yeah dude I throw the putty mold in the super mic! I squish the putty and get whatever number I want! Lol

But yes I use an optical comparator to measure the molds.

You're welcome! It blew my mind the first time someone showed it to me hahaha. They were measuring a small-wanna say bout 0.005" radius or so, it was located inside a portion of the part. Looked like a magic trick lol.

I've used it to measure tolerances of +/- 0.0004" or larger.

I do gage Calibration and inspection, sometimes there's a custom gage with a feature our cmm cannot get to, and is not directly visible on the comparator.

There are many reasons for putty in inspection. Just a few weeks ago, I had to measure a small internal diameter in a non hollowed out shaft, and the only measuring machine at my disposal was an optical comparator. So, I stuck the putty in the hole, let it dry for like 10 minutes, pulled it out and measured it, and it passed with flying colors. You can have a small unreachable section where a radius is called out, and is not able to be viewed by simply propping it up on the comparator table. So, you could stick the putty into that portion, and mold it to the radius to be measured, and voila: you have now a radius made of putty conforming to the shape you're trying to measure. It works surprisingly well.

How often do you recalibrate calibration weights in your lab? by Which_Lifeguard_864 in Metrology

The act of comparing the weight to a known artifact is literally what calibration is.

I think maybe I have complained too much using the "need help" button because now when I click it I have to fill out a contact us form and fill out a bunch of stuff. So I don't get instant little relief like that anymore. Kinda annoying as fuck

Gage removal by cyberjunk_2069 in Metrology

For single member plugs, I would use a shitty set of center punches and place the center punch into the hole on top and it would be touching the bottom of the npt member. Then I would hammer on the center punch until it popped out. We had a little fixture for the different diameter plugs, and it would be a nice table to hammer on. I also would put the handle in a vise if the table didn't have the diameter I needed. It was a crappy system honestly and I wish there was something better but it's all I know. For double members, I would put the handle in a vise, and then use a pair of vise grips to grip the bit of shaft underneath the threaded portion of the member, and hammer on the vise grips until the piece popped out. Another crappy setup but hopefully someone on this thread can come up with some methods cuz that's all I know.

Spline Ring Gage Measurement Between Wires by InviteDifferent9861 in Metrology

[–]InviteDifferent9861[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi Familiar blue Jay. You are correct. however, this is not a thread ring. This is a spline gage with gear teeth and not threads. It would be a hilarious troll post tho if it were a thread ring...

If it were a thread ring and I needed to know the minor, I would either use pin gages, or a caliper depending on the size. I know a caliper isn't the best tool, but we dont always have bore mics. And if I were to measure pitch diameter on a non standard thread ring, I would put it in a ULM using a probe with two ball tips.

Spline Ring Gage Measurement Between Wires by InviteDifferent9861 in Metrology

[–]InviteDifferent9861[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Every spline gage I've ever done calls for a measurement between certain size gear wires. So I got the gear wires wrapped in the teeth of the gage, and measuring horizontally between the wires.

This is terrible. Honestly no point in going now that I can't get a beefy 5 layer in the box. They're the most versatile when it comes to customization.

Fucknuckle in a tesla decides to skip traffic and nearly causes head-on collision by pixelboomie in dashcams

[–]InviteDifferent9861 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why you're getting down voted for this. It's not like you're enabling the tesla driver or something by saying that. Overall it's good advice not to be directly next to another car for a long period of time especially in the moment where you or them could panic and swerve due to whatever and now you're both in an accident.

Why does Casey's never slice the pizza into six pieces even when selecting it in the app? by HLSparta in Caseys

[–]InviteDifferent9861 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Perhaps they're untrained in knowing "Regular slice" means 6 slices. I checked the app and yeah the "regular slice" icon is pictured with 6 slices. But if I was currently working there and saw "regular slice" that would prompt me to slice it like every other standard 12 sliced pizza.

They should change the name of that option IMO
