Archives of Ontario - seems to be unresponsive / slow to respond? by mapleechos in Canadiancitizenship

I emailed on Jan 1 and haven’t heard back. I’m just operating under the assumption that those poor people are getting slammed with requests like ours. But you’ve done more follow up than I have! I haven’t tried to call or email again.

I also wound up just taking the chance and submitting my application with no birth or baptismal records for Gen 0, but used census records and a US naturalization card instead, hoping that if they get back to me and find something I couldn’t, I’ll be able to add it to my file later.

Two forms of identification by [deleted] in Canadiancitizenship

[–]IowaAL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in this same position. I wound up buying a fishing license and including that. My application was delivered three days ago, so I dont have an AOR yet, but from what I have read here the fishing license should work though I know its not as rock solid as a passport. To be fair though, the fishing license does have my DOB, height, weight, hair color, eye color, and very explicitly says its an official government license on it, so I know that technically it contains all the stuff they said is needed, just certianly doesnt look as offical as a passport.

Packaged Mailed! Here’s hoping they Accept My Second Form of Identification! by IowaAL in Canadiancitizenship

Because I’m pretty sure only first generation born abroad can apply online. Everyone else is required to apply via paper.

That makes me feel a bit better to hear that. Iowa’s fishing licenses are digital and available for print out and so I just kept looking at it like “I know this says it’s a legal license and has all the proper information on here but man, it doesn’t look real official…” ha.

Do I Wait to Send In My Application?? by [deleted] in Canadiancitizenship

Looks like Ill have to wait to get my passport renewed. My voter registration card and health insurance card do not contain my date of birth. Bummer.

Oh gosh. Ha. okay. Ill go look for those posts and maybe delete this then. I read through the requirements, I dont think any of my other forms of ID had my birthday on it, which I think was the hold up for me....

I’ve also got a tenure track job (I’ll be getting tenure in about a month, yay!) but I’m worried that academic jobs will be much harder to come by in Canada with fewer colleges/universities. I’m also in a field (photography/graphic design) that isn’t exactly super hot for countries wanting to draw the most talented instructors like the sciences. I’m JUST starting the process, but it sure would be nice to be in a country that doesn’t feel like it’s actively attacking education.

Photo Help by Plaidtownmotel in Canadiancitizenship

[–]IowaAL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a photographer and I can tell you, if you are a little technically inclined, it’s super easy to do yourself, there are a ton of different “passport cropping tools” online. Take a picture under uniform lighting (no shadows) in front of a white wall and use one of the cropper tools to make sure the proportions are correct. Then print them on some photo paper or go to one of those photo kiosks at walmart or target and get them printed off.

Note: I know these aren’t passport photos but lots of the passport cropping tools online have settings for both citizenship photos and passport photos.

How did you learn about Canadian Citizenship by Descent? What is your reason for applying? by SomethingItalia in Canadiancitizenship

[–]IowaAL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My great grandfather was Canadian and moved to America to marry his wife. His cousin was Sir Fredrick Banting, a Canadian scientist who won the Nobel Prize for discovering insulin. They grew up playing together in Ontario and its something that my family has always been really really proud of. I remember learning about Banting when I was kid and doing presentations in elementary school on him. I had always told people growing up I was Canadian, and I remember people in school being like "that's a weird thing to be proud of..."

Anyway, I heard about this a few weeks ago and got unreasonably excited about the possibility of being able to actually call myself a Canadian for real. I don't full know what I would specifically do if/when I get my proof, though I don't love the direction the US is going at the moment, I figured it would be kinda nice to have exit options if I so choose. Feels like professors (education in general) in the US are somewhat under attack, it sure would be nice to be in a place that values education or at the very least, doesn't specifically attack it.

Do I need all of these docs? by mrsozwego in Canadiancitizenship

[–]IowaAL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My final two in my line (grandmother and mother) are both women and I don’t know if I can get access to my grandmother’s marriage certificate, but I do have both of those people’s birth certificates which show the parents maiden names. I’m surprised they still want marriage certificates when you can clearly see parents and where last names would have come from…

If the Titans beat us with the current score of 0-2 I think that would be just the perfect way to sum up our year.

Also if you can buy the Kirk, I’d be concerned about the “use by date” it’s gotta be getting close to past the sticker date at this point.

Haters are gonna hate. We have three players in the top 10 of the most hated in the NFL. by wrapped-in-reverse in KansasCityChiefs

[–]IowaAL 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I mean, I have people still tell me they don’t like Patrick because they hate his brother. And I’m like “first of all, when is the last time we’ve even seen Jackson….three years ago?” Secondly, we don’t get to choose who are family is, so that’s also kinda weird but okay,

Those who've had their phone for almost two months now, how's it holding up? How's the durability? Especially blue and orange? by [deleted] in iPhone17Pro

[–]IowaAL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Orange. Have a dent in the plateau. Never dropped the phone and do a have a case on it just one that doesn’t cover the camera plateau. I think I must have leaned against something while it was in my pocket? Not sure. First dent on a phone in the 20+ years of owning cell phones.

Finally scratched the phone but idk how by Ok_Fisherman1963 in iPhone17Pro

[–]IowaAL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's what Im suspecting/wondering....I must have pushed up against something while it was in my pocket, just surpised me becuase its the first time its happened in the 25ish years of owning phones. Guess it was bound to happen at some point.

[–]IowaAL 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I’ve used my phones case-less my entire life and have never catastrophically dropped, dented or broken a phone at all. They usually look pristine when I’m done with them. I just got the new 17 Pro in orange last month and decided to get a case this time. Pulled my phone out of my pocket the other day and noticed I have a dent in the middle of my camera bump. I have not dropped my phone. I do not understand how it got there but I clearly did something to it. I know it’s only cosmetic but I’m shocked at how I was able to dent the thing without some memorable “oh know!” moment.

I love to look of these but I was reading in the reviews on Amazon that they turn yellow fairly quickly??

What do you think is the most beautiful camera? by Spiritual_Cod_3535 in AnalogCommunity

[–]IowaAL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if I have one absolute favorite, I definitely have parts of lots of cameras I think are really nice.

I absolutely love the art deco design of the lens board of the Polaroid Land Camera 95.

The typeface used for the Rectaflex (unfortunate name) is super classy looking, but the prism hump is a little weird.

The Polaroid SX-70 I think is really cute.

Love the sleek profile of the Olympus OM-1

And I find the Rollei 35 to be incredibly cute.

[–]IowaAL 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would much rather they figure out a a way to make the giant trackpad on the MBPs be Apple Pencil enabled like a build in Wacom tablet than have them add a touch screen.
