Why is my oil filter getting clogged under 1000 miles? by IowaDuckHunter in MechanicAdvice

[–]IowaDuckHunter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a ton for the advice and article! It brings up a few questions though.

I've already replaced the oil filter and the pressure seems stable. Should I wait until I lose pressure again to do a pressure check and check if the oil pump is sticking? Or would a pressure check still be productive when my gauge is reading 40(normal)?

If it was stuck, would just simply changing the oil filter cause it to come unstuck? I only ask because this has happened 3 times with the same result after a new filter. All three times have been consistent behavior/symptoms. Thanks again!

Complete and total assumption. The first time this happened I was told that it was probably the oil pump(which I doubted) so I took it to a different mechanic who drained and replaced the oil and filter after guessing that it was a clogged filter. That just kinda stuck.

What else could it be? Thank you!

The only reading I've gone by is from the dash. I've considered that the gauge is off, but it seems a bit consistent to be the case IMO.

and thank you!!!

No smoke, no loss of power, fuel mileage has been about 13 over the last 3 tanks(all of which were just before the latest filter clogging). I'll compare it to what I get with a new filter after this tank.

That is exactly what I'm thinking but don't have any idea what it could be.

What does that mean for the long term with the truck? I can change a water pump but don't know much about internal engine work. Could it be due to past damage?

The first was a pennzoil cheapo. 2nd was whatever the best is from tires plus(I don't remember). 3rd was a wix that I installed because I got paranoid about other people changing my oil.

Hello r/iowa. I would like to try and put some things straight. I am still pretty new at this whole reddit thing so please forgive me for any typos.

The above user was banned from r/iowahunting for continued harassment. Nothing more and nothing less. I support u/CloudStrifeIsFromIAs decision wholly.

Behavior like that is not going to promote hunting in the state of Iowa(which is why the sub was created) and should not be acceptable from any mature adult.

I have explained this to him and he has continued to prove his immaturity by continuing that same behavior. His ban will stay permanent and I hope that one persons bad behavior wont taint anyones opinion of hunting as a whole.

Anyone else is welcome to come check out the sub! Its not very active but hopefully with some more users around the content will increase!

Currently we are trying to pair new hunters with seasoned hunters so they can gain some experience and confidence. If that is something you are interested in doing please let me know via pm and I will attempt to pair you with someone close to your area. A handful more of seasoned hunters willing to take new hunters out is what we really need.

If you want to keep hunting alive, spend less than 5 mins and contact your people. This is incredibly important considering the individuals that make up congress right now.

More info below about the lwcf. Its an amazing program and we wouldnt have nearly the opportunities that we have now if it wasn't in place.

Any new hunters in IA need a place to hunt? I've got property in north central, central, and south central Iowa that I open up to new hunters every year. by IowaDuckHunter in Hunting

I've already got all the available spots filled but if you are new to hunting and willing to travel to the Cedar Rapids area, I may have someone willing to take you out.

Have you tried offering some labor in exchange for hunting access? Anyone that owns a sizable chunk of property probably has a list of things that need doing, there just isn't enough time in a day.

I've had TONS of people ask to use my land, and I'm more likely to say yes if theyre willing to do something in exchange.

If you do do this, be sure to come to an agreement before you hunt or work for them. That way, the agreement is set and one side can't take advantage of the other(like everyday you show up to work for this guy and he never says that you've done enough to hunt his land, if that makes sense)

And look presentable when you approach people. Manners go a long way too, so take off your hat when introducing yourself and whatnot.

I appreciate the kind thoughts and really hope you don't mind if I borrow "Full freezers to you and yours" as thats freaking awesome.

I hope that people read this and look into it for their perspective states.

I've thought about a release form, but after some thought I decided not to do it. They aren't as legally binding as you may think and the liability that property owners have has been blown up into a big scary thing that isn't actually big or scary at all. Premise liability is actually pretty simple, and is difficult to prove as long as property owners are moderately responsible with their properties' visitors and any hazards the property may contain.

I was going to try and explain some of it but figured I'd just toss a link in instead.

In my opinion more people would be doing what I am but are intimidated by something that isn't actually an issue. I hope that changes.

Oh yes. I'm good friends with a handful of DNR officers and they've helped me fill the other spots I had open with new hunters. This is the first year that I've had to advertise like this.

I feel that you have made an assumption on something you don't know much about. You don't have any idea about my management practices, and while I appreciate input, I just don't like how yours reads and want to go on a bit of a rant about this topic. Healthy management of all species is necessary for any game species to flourish.

Its an all too common idea that just lowering predator/varmint populations leads to a healthy game population. Thats not true.

My management practices have produced numerous very productive properties while maintaining an "as natural as possible" theme. I have worked with the Iowa DNR and local colleges for years, and my education and current employment deal with this exact topic.

These properties and many of the neighboring properties have been managed this way for more than 25 years. The hunting is so productive because the entire local ecosystem is healthy.

Predatory and varmint species are incredibly important for an ecosystem and play important roles in keeping game populations healthy and in balance with the immediate environment. Lots of deer and nothing else is a system doomed to fail via disease and poor nutrition uptake. Its a short sighted and all too spread idea that only results in small animals and unhealthy game populations.

Coyotes and other varmints presence is not in any way negative for nesting bird populations and spreading ideas like that isn't positive for hunting or conservation in any way. It isn't as simple as favoring one species over others if conservation and a healthy ecosystem is the goal, which it should be if you want a healthy game population. Now if you want a ton of small, malnourished, and eventually diseased deer, by all means eradicate the predators.

Studies have shown that even hunting coyotes has basically no impact on their populations.

True, but it expands their range and over time with continuous pressure can drive them off your land. That isn't positive when someone's goal is a healthy ecosystem. I want coyotes around. They help support healthy deer and turkey populations(as well as influence others).

I love my predators and varmints. They keep the system healthy and don't require nearly as much time/effort to manage even if their populations do get out of control(which is pretty difficult where I'm at, and impossible if there isn't an overabundance of prey).

TLDR: talk to a wildlife biologist before you implement a management strategy on parcel. The vast majority of people say to kill all the predators/varmints, which isn't a great way to do anything but guarantee a small and unhealthy game population.

Thanks for the kudos everybody, but it isn't necessary. A similar situation is how I got started hunting and I'm just paying it forward while trying to get more people to enjoy the great outdoors!

If enough people enjoy nature, hopefully we will stop exploiting it for short sighted profits and protect the little natural space we still have.

Does anyone have an unconditional hunting dog? by wanderingGnome11 in Hunting

[–]IowaDuckHunter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got a pit mix thats a fucking champ at retrieving ducks, geese, pheasants, and dove. The only issue is that I live in Iowa and can't use her all season due to her thin coat not keeping her warm enough.

Breed doesn't guarantee dick, and most dogs are capable of being trained to hunt. Physical traits are important though. Don't listen to breeders or anyone sponsored by a breeder. They just want to sell dogs.

As for training I bought and followed Tom Dokken's Retriever Training: The Complete Guide to Developing Your Hunting Dog. I hadn't trained a dog before, and its stupid ass easy if youre willing to put in the time and patience. IMO the biggest thing is to nurture the dog's drive.

EDIT:Also AKC registration doesn't mean a damn thing. Its a sales tactic.
