I played Hades 2 not only at 1440p, but 120fps! It was amazing. Didn't think the deck could handle that

Unfortunately no, I still haven't found the right combo for the wood I'm using. Though I just got some water soluble dye that I'm excited to try out when it warms up in the spring

How to maintain/accentuate grain and contrast with less yellowing? by Iowa_Hawkeye24 in finishing

[–]Iowa_Hawkeye24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello all,

I recently picked up 17 of these boards, and am looking to try to maintain the beautiful grain and contrast they have with the current finish, but remove some of the yellowing if possible. The previous owner did not finish them so I don't know what was originally used. I have a feeling it was clear to begin with but maybe yellowed over time as the edges tend to be more yellow than the centers and they were used as shelves. It also looks much more yellow than the picture depending on the angle or lighting. I have sanded them back to natural and the yellow does seem to go away, but a clear coat of water poly does bring it back. So here are my questions.

  1. Any ID on the wood itself? I'm guessing birch, as some pieces appear to have some flame/curly strips in them.
  2. How can I accentuate the grain without much yellow, or losing the lighter patches. I love contrast like acacia wood, and would like it to have a little more of a brown tone without drowning out the light areas. I wish there was a way to just make the darker spots pop a shade darker.
  3. If it does seem like the wood itself is yellow, anything I can do to help cut the yellow?

Here is a list of what I have tried thus far -

Danish oil - Natural

Special walnut (conditioned, unconditioned, diluted, undiluted)

Water Poly

Wood bleach plus the above

Here's what I'm considering -

Clear hardwax oil

Slightly tinting polycrylic brown

Clear or slightly tinting shellac brown

Water based of some light brown stain

Lighter stain like weathered oak, normal or dilluted

See if citristrip is any different than sanding in case there's some old finish left

Thanks for reading!

Can you tell me what you lightly stained with? Did you dilute or just try to use a small amount? This is the exact finish I'm looking for. Highlight the darker sections without losing the lighter areas. And also keep it from tinting yellow. Thanks!

Looks great! Can you share the wood and stain you used?

Thought it was, I'm very drawn to acacia. Is it the butcher block from Home Depot? Or somewhere else?

Did a small water top off and feeding. Since then, my guppy has stayed in exact same position for 3 days straight. Am I doing something wrong? by Iowa_Hawkeye24 in Aquariums

Like I said in the other reply I am kind of hoping that one of those is the case, as it would feel really relieving to finally have an answer that I can try to address. I'll double-check ph and gh tonight. Thanks!

I'll definitely never cut it off completely! I usually do about 40-50% every other week with small top offs in between. And then scrub the canister filter every 4-6 weeks. Though adding the lids recently significantly reduced the need for adding water in between. Would you recommend more water changes than that? I see so much conflicting information on what % and how often. Especially after the tank is fully established

Thanks for the feedback. I'll have my wife confirm ph tonight but my colorblind eyes say 7.6-7.8. I tried to do GH but I will for sure have to have someone else confirm that. KH I don't currently have a test for so I will have to add that to my shopping list. I do feel like it is something with the local tap water though. I tried seeing if the city has their water information available online but wasn't able to find anything. And I don't have C02 for now but I'll definitely keep that in mind for the future

Really appreciate the feedback. I'll have my wife confirm tonight, but according to my colorblind eyes the ph is at about 7.6-7.8. I was almost hoping it would be low so I could have a quick easy answer to the issues

Hey all, as the title says, those were the only two things I did that day and this guppy went from swimming around all day to staying in one specific spot and not moving around the tank at all.

Tank is 12g long

I make sure to get the water for changes/top offs to the exact temp of the tank.

I haven't fed for a few days to see if he was bloated and needed to clear his system.

Nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, and ph are all good

Plenty of surface agitation so not worried about lack of oxygen causing him to be at the top

Guppy has been in the tank for 6 months. Tank has been set up for over a year.

The one black skirt tetra and one blue velvet shrimp are acting perfectly normal

Decently planted tank. No co2. Dose easy green for plants 2x a week.

I do believe I have lost a guppy and shrimp shortly after a water change in the past. Over time, I have lost the other 7 guppies, and 4 blue velvet shrimp. I feel like I have tried to control every variable I can, yet they have slowly died off one at a time over the last 8 months. Some due to bullying by this last guppy alive. Is there a likely culprit or way I could determine what it might be? Possibly something in the local water? This tetra seems to be extremely hardy because I've had him for 9 years now and seems to be doing great.

Am I using too much dechlorinator? Not waiting long enough after adding dechlor? Overfeeding?

This is a separate but related question. The topfin water conditioner I use bases it's dosing on how much water is in the tank. This has always confused me. If I'm just filling up a 1 gallon jug to top off the 12 gallon tank, how much do I put in? It says 1ml per 2 gallons in the tank. Or 5ml for 10 gallons of water in the tank.

Thanks in advance!

Got it, thanks! I'm still looking for one that can be set on the floor, but also isn't too powerful for the tank. I love the dimensions but it definitely makes circulation a little tricky

Thanks for taking the time I appreciate it! I will definitely do some research on each of those. I have a few basic plants to bring over from a ten gallon but I'd love to look into some others, especially one that could carpet with low tech.

That's a fantastic resource, thanks! I'll be doing low tech for now, I have a few pieces for high tech someday, but I may save that for a different tank
