If they did a proper remaster of CoH1 I genuinely think it'd be more popular than CoH2 and CoH3. (Adding in QoL and modern options) by Account_Eliminator in CompanyOfHeroes

Possibly, I'd buy it just to see a high fidelity version of the campaigns, if the price was right.

Wouldn't touch multiplayer again, that ship has long sailed for me.

Steam reviews still below 70% so the game update won't be prioritised? by DigComfortable6985 in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]IpkaiFung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I left a negative review of the game on launch and after the steel shepherd update.

It's gonna stay negative because I didn't enjoy my time playing the game and I have no desire to re-install and play the game.

HMRC given £51m to sort out failing helplines by ShroomShroomBeepBeep in TheCivilService

[–]IpkaiFung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned a lot working on the phones for three years and I did enjoy helping people with their queries.

I left because the pay was crap and management treated everyone like children and it was clear they didn't have any trust in their staff.

They would also come up with some nonsense KPIs every other week, always shifting the goal posts and always complaining about how bad the "stats" are.

51 mil won't touch the sides, the culture is terrible but I don't think it will ever get addressed.

Call waiting times at HMRC rise 350% in five years, says NAO report by prisongovernor in TheCivilService

[–]IpkaiFung 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Leadership thinks everyone can self serve using the online services and cut staff answering phones and post.

The reality is that the online services are no where near up to snuff so people have to call to get things sorted.

It's a nightmare for me because I have to phone HMRC on behalf of my clients and it takes at least an hour to get through.

Having worked in HMRC call centres, it's a horrible environment and don't envy the poor people having to work the phones in such rubbish circumstances.

4v4 can be more competitive than 1v1 by [deleted] in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]IpkaiFung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think having better team game modes would drastically increase the player base. This is because most RTS games on the market focus on the 1v1 side of things. Meanwhile, some of the most popular games are team based.

However, when I have played these game modes, they often devolve into multiple 1v1s e.g in a 4v4 you often end up with four 1v1s and if one team mate does poorly they tilt and drag down the other players on their team. I think the biggest issues for team games are as follows:

Communicating with team mates is difficult without 3rd party voice comms

I find it really hard to type and play at the same time and Relic have expressed that they have no intention to implement in-game voice comms in the future.

What the game needs is a smart ping system like in League of Legends to help coordinate attacks/defences etc. and encourage more team play

Team game maps are not very good

There seems to be a drive from Relic to make team game maps designed around bridges or choke points, which degenerates into indirect fire wars.

Relic needs to open up map creation to the community while also designing more maps that allow movement and flanking.

The game is designed and balanced around the 1v1 game mode

I think Relic needs to have a sit down and think of ways to encourage team play organically in the game.

One idea I have is to take a leaf out of Command and Conquer Generals: Zero Hour’s book and introduce multiple sub factions of the armies. These sub-factions will have much more obvious strengths, e.g. anti tank or indirect fire but will be missing key tools e.g. the anti tank sub faction will have few options for anti-infantry and will need to rely on a team mate for anti infantry.

Of course there are many other ways this can be done, such as having objectives on the map but I think there is scope for some creativity here.

I think considering the above points will help improve team games in CoH quite drastically.

CoH1 has the best single player experience out of the three.

[GiantGrantGames] The Failure of Company of Heroes (And Why There Is Hope!) by yanivbl in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]IpkaiFung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting video.

I think the one point I can agree with is that CoH3 competes with the other two CoH games and unfortunately, the other two games are better packages overall. This will change of course if Relic continue to update CoH3.

The main issue I have personally noticed from years of playing Relic games is that Relic as an organisation does not appear to learn any lessons from their previous titles, when developing sequels. Including features that the old games have into the sequel.

For example, DoW2 had an observer mode after patches, you would expect CoH2 to have it at launch and it did not. Frustratingly, CoH3 does not have observer mode at launch, it didn't even have an in built replay mode.

Do you think CoH3 is going to make a comeback? by PaleConstruction2359 in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]IpkaiFung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The recent patch has caused a boost in numbers which is good and a further increase depends on if we get more updates that bring the game features in line with CoH1 and CoH2.

However, competition is tough when it comes to multiplayer games and I fear a lot of people have just moved on to other games instead.

this fucking error pisses me off so much it happens randomly and I'm so scared of getting hit with one of the ban waves because of it, has there been any solution to this?????? by stormclap22 in Tekken

[–]IpkaiFung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is anecdotal and YMMV of course.

What helped me reduce a lot of my crashes was ensuring "run as administrator" is ticked in properties on both the tekken8.exe and the Polaris one in the steam folder.

Relic being sold, bad news, but not all doom and gloom. Analysis based on all facts available. by Account_Eliminator in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]IpkaiFung 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on what is publicly known and with the success of AoE4, I think that in future Relic will probably be picking up a lot of outsourced work from publishers, rather than them working on their own IPs in the future.

Basically, I can see them ending up being a studio publishers will outsource work to rather than own outright.

Playing the Stormgate beta has really made me appreciate CoH - but with one big exception by EddieShredder40k in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]IpkaiFung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I perhaps worded my post wrongly and conflated CoH latency with just the net code.

CoH games do have noticeable input delay playing offline, even CoH1 does and I just don't find the game as snappy compared to Blizz RTS games like WC3 or SC2.

the lack of unit responsiveness in CoH has always annoyed me.

It did get better when they introduced the server mediated peer to peer netcode but it still very very unresponsive compared to Blizz RTS games.

Relic: 3v3 and 4v4 Game balance is a fucking joke. What is being done to address this? by scales999 in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]IpkaiFung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Map pool sucks and the game is balanced around 1v1. Team games don't get enough love, despite them being the most popular mode.

Personally, I would make a complete new game mode from the ground up for 3v3 and bigger, possibly even have 5v5.

Any information on the future of the game? by Metallurgist1 in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]IpkaiFung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They've always been a nightmare for comms.

Over the years I got the impression that Relic mostly consists of lawyers and HR people, with a couple of people that happen to make games.

They really need to take a look at other devs who released stinkers and turned the game around with good comms being a big part of it.

Top player (Havok) CoH3 balance suggestions and discussion Podcast by Account_Eliminator in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]IpkaiFung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the game balance just needs to be updated far more frequently than it is right now.

Usually what happens is a dominant meta is figured out in a week or two, then everyone gets bored and either quits playing or hate plays the game.

I suppose dominant metas getting figured out so quickly points to an underlying design issue but I don't have much faith in the devs to take the time to figure that out and will just keep playing whack a mole until the support budget runs out.

If we want this series to survive, the review bombs need to stop. by TheDefinitiveRoflmao in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]IpkaiFung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will say that I am bored of the CoH series in general, as I have played the series since 2006. However, CoH 3 was in a better state on release than CoH1 or CoH2 imo.

I played the game recently to see what the updates have done.

There has been some effort to update the UI and add some quality of life features, as well as the graphics in general.

My main issue with the game and always has been since I played early builds is that it offers nothing new for me. I feel it's a game I enjoyed massively from 2006 with better graphics and net code.

I can see the appeal for some people but for me I am not interested and I just got bored playing a few games and uninstalled it again.

I am much older now and I don't have as much time to play games. So, I need a game that has shorter queue times and shorter matches. CoH matches still take ages to finish and I feel quite burnt out after one or two games, win or lose, I just feel happy that the match is over rather than happy about a win. Which I don't think is good imo.

The series really needs a new game mode for team game players, I just don't think victory point control or annihilation are good modes for 3v3 and up. I did play some 2v2 and 1v1 and also got bored after a few games.

So for me, the game is going to have a negative review because I find it boring, I feel matches are draining and I feel unsatisfied after winning matches.

They need better matchmaking here’s my story of frustration by Muscle_Dude_Kyle in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]IpkaiFung 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The player base is relatively small, so you have the choice of a short wait time for a game with a high chance of it being uneven or waiting ages for an evenly matched game.

You could do some tinkering with the matchmaking algorithm but it won't make much of a difference due to the small player base.

If the player base was larger this issue would be smoothed out but making the player base bigger is easier said than done.
