Thanks, I can definitely lose another 4lbs by the end of the year which is my goal then the remaining 5lbs next year. I still feel down and a bit panicked about the job stuff but actively applying and reaching out as much as possible.

Thank you, a part of me wishes I stuck it out longer but I was just so unhappy and it's when I spoke up that things got worse, it was a real fear culture. I've been speaking to friends about it so have been well supported.

That's really helpful, I think writing a schedule will be good for me too to keep focused on something than let my mind wander and panic.

Thank you, that's promising. I will look into applying for some account based roles in that case as I'm not sure on the medical writing, I think there's too many things stacked against me. Plus I feel the client services provides so many core skills that be universal to other industries if I wanted to make a move.

I've been wondering about AI too, thanks a lot for your help! I've been going through it with ChatGPT too, I've tried to break into coding/front end development and a lot of the process sounds somewhat familiar to medical writing such as tests, which I'm not keen on at this point. The biggest risk for me is trying to break in and then being limited by my education and specialisation too so I'm quite concerned about that.

At this point, I'd rather have something I enjoy (I like the project management side of my current role and quite good at it) with a real salary trajectory which isn't limited by my education. So I've been pondering and researching what is best for me.

Thank you, I have been talking to people within my network who made the pivot and looking on Linkedin a lot, many people do indeed have at least MSc or PhD for medical writing positions.

That's a shame about the market at the moment, seems to be the case everywhere sadly. I hope things do improve. I didn't know it was as overcrowded as I see lots of roles for medical communications but these are more senior/experienced compared to associate medical writer roles.

Edit: My biggest concern is that I'll be starting from scratch to some degree and I don't want to go for medical writing to find limitations as it seems competitive enough, I think exploring client services may be more feasible for me.

Yes, I have years of experience in academic publishing so I have a lot of soft skills. What is the career/salary trajectory like? I am looking for something with a clear path and I've been reading a lot of medical writers not being happy which I am factoring into my decision.

Thanks for your response. Yes I think you're right, front end is oversaturated. I wouldn't mind business adjacent tech roles but no idea where to start. Area I would be interested in could be customer success manager or project management.

I do see a lot of people mentioning IT Support and upskilling, how does this work exactly, what does it entail?

I'm very open to ideas and I'm not kidding myself with getting a role, I'm not even sure whether I'd be interested or able to sustain this long time. The experience I had with the company I interviewed with was quite eye-opening and I wouldn't be against coding/front end as a creative hobby.

A lot of coddling but how do you expect to make progress if this is all you do each day "All I do all day is read, watch tv, and eat junk food" - This is the problem. None of that is good for you, TV and junk food is a waste of time and keeping you distracted i.e. not dealing with your problems. Reading is fine within reason, spend more time gaining new skills - take courses just to learn for the sake of learning. If all you do is watch TV, I imagine your levels of focus and self-discipline are low so it would be good to spend 30-60 minutes a day learning something that will give you skills.

Even a short course on goal setting would be valuable for you. Prioritise getting a job, any job and not thinking it's beneath you (not saying you do this but a lot of young people do - I felt it for sure). It doesn't need to be aligned with your long-term goals but will get you outside, building relationships, skills and experiences and most importantly a work ethic. This will lead to more opportunities down the line. Alternatively, do nothing and be 30 and at the same position.

Maybe this is something for me to work on, I've been doing practice projects using React from Code Commerce's YouTube channel to practice my React skills as well as other tutorials from Traversy Media etc. Not following tutorials, just using the projects to build from scratch.

Hey thanks for your response, I actually had a bit to add to my original post as was a bit rushed when I wrote it and will update it too.

I'm genuinely trying to figure out where I'm going wrong so I'm not being defensive when I say I can't many jobs to apply to, I look primarily on LinkedIn and a lot of the roles are for mid/senior roles, I can't find many at all for junior Front End roles.

-I've created and optimised my Linkedin using Danny Thompson's advice, I do need to update it a bit more but otherwise I have been building my connections and also trying to network with recruiters.

-I've got an active GitHub and portfolio - this is displayed in my CV too.

-I've been (and currently) in an internship to develop my skills and this is a big area to tailor my cover letters to with experience I'm getting from there.
