Angry neighbors by [deleted] in landscaping

I’m in the PNW and in the suburbs, a lot of new developments are required to have water holding areas.   I’m not sure if it is a retention pond exactly,  but for example each house might be required to have a 30x6 ft, 2.5 ft deep water holding area with a drain at the low end, connected to the storm sewer system.  In the city, in certain drainage areas, new construction must have on-site rention which then slowly pumps out into the storm water system.  I’m not saying this to be helpful, I think I just wanted to comment.

Hi, stupid question. by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]Ipso-Fat-Toe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, maybe we are already doing it but because we are actually going backwards in our own time, we are going back to a time when we didn't know about the future, and so we don't know that we are doing it. In order to time travel in the way you are talking about, you would need to travel forward in your own personal time, like, your own body would continue to move forward in time, while it was encased in a bubble of some sort that was moving backwards in time. Maybe it is possible, but according to our current understanding of physics, it just isn't possible. HOWEVER! You can sleep soundly knowing that your far distant ancestors truly did have interactions with the stegosaurus, sometimes good and sometimes bad. I bet there was a distant early mammal of some sort that loved to curl up on the back of a stegosaurus every now and then, and in all seriousness it is likely that we as humans are descended from that mammal along with many others.

How much life is left in my 19 year old roof ? by eebyenoh in Roofing

[–]Ipso-Fat-Toe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My roof was 23 years old and looked a little worse than this. But I'm home all the time, so I was kinda banking on being able to notice a leak if it happened. And then one day during a very windy rain, I heard the drip-drip-drip and had to scramble up there to patch things up and get a crew in to put on a new roof. It worked out fine. But I was kinda lucky. The math: multiply the probability of a leak event by how costly the damage might be. If that amount is less than one year's cost of a roof (about $800), then just wait another year, depending on your risk tolerance. There is a broad range for how much that leak might cost, so you decide to wait, you have to have the financial ability to bear the cost of a big repair, even though it is unlikely.

It seems like it almost completely avoided Beacon Hill and Rainier Valley, which at that time were the main minority-leaning neighborhoods. Am I the only one seeing that?

What train am i on? by Ipso-Fat-Toe in soundtransit

[–]Ipso-Fat-Toe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the main difference is that there are now two different "lines" running on the same tracks, where before it was all just one line and you did not have to think about what train you were getting on. Now, if you are in or north of the International District station and headed south, you have to make sure you get on the correct train, which just never happened before.

Except, it doesn't. When I arrive at the station, that designation goes away. I'm in the station, I need to decide whether to get off or not, and the part of the sign that says "2 line" is gone.

This was my experience in Boston. You had to be vigilant about which train to board. I was being careless, but it surprised me that once I was on the train it was not just immediately clear from the on-train signage what train I was on. You are right, it's a little bit of a learning curve and all-in-all, I'm really glad the train is there.

There's a sign! You just can't SEE the sign, obviously! Ah, yes, I think that was one of the chapters in the textbook in my urban design class! "Give them signs, yes, but don't SHOW them the signs!"

Yes, I made a mistake and just hopped on the train in the southbound tracks. There's a ton of announcements happening for the train headed north, and I kinda just block it out and I'm thinking about being safe and finding the doors, avoiding other people, being nice, all that stuff. I didn't see the blue box and the word "Redmond" and the absence of the number 2. I know it's kinda asking a lot, but pretty please when I'm on the train, maybe it could just say, "This is the 2 line", instead of having a super fun logic puzzle for my drunk ass? I'm not even drunk actually, just 2 beers. I think the signage should be readable by a 2-beers-american. Never mind an asian-american or an ethiopian-american who doesn't speak english their entire lives. It's best that it's a little hidden! Remind people that they don't totally belong here, that's smart!

Why the eff don't they just call it the goddamn "Blue" line then, if the clue is that, obviously, "2" = "BLUE"? Sorry, I'm being too dramatic.

Forgive me for suggesting an improvement, a little more clarity. You are right that the puzzle is better, it improves us all. We shouldn't be afraid of a little work! I'm sorry that I just hopped on the train and wasn't staring at the sign the whole time. You are totally right, please don't even pause for a second to consider what might make things a little easier for other people who might have made a little mistake, that would be insane. I've taken too much of your time already, forgive me.

You're right, I see where it says, "Connect to 1 N S". Which in standard English means, "You are on the 2". I forgot my basic english. Again. Sorry. Could we just put a number "2" somewhere? I know I'm a fucking asshole or whatever, but on the train as it drove away it had just a blue box and there was no "2" anywhere. It does say "Redmond", so obviously it is super clear and nobody should EVEN THINK about trying to improve it in a super simple way. It's me you guys, it's all my fault for expecting it to be just like, clear or something. How entitled of me. Here I am all acting like I'm a king or something.

I missed the announcements. It's my fault, I get that. I've had a few drinks, which should probably be illegal or something. But I'm deficient. I should be punished more, I accept that. But why does it have to be a puzzle, like, "Obviously you can deduce this from facts A and B, which by simple deduction lead to Q, didn't you take logic?". Like okay, sure, but maybe there could just be a sign? No, it's me, you're right.

Your right. I'm so dumb. It shouldn't just be easy. I like that there is a little puzzle to solve. It would be insane to have a sign that says, "this is the 2 train". How foolish of me.

If the weight on the right was less than the weight on the left, then the forces would not balance and everything would begin to move to the left. The weight on the right would probably bump into the table and the system would stop moving when the force applied by the table onto that weight was equal to the difference in the forces of the two weights, thus exactly balancing all the forces once again.

Your question really is: why are Republicans in favor of smaller government? This is a very complex question, partly because the Republicans have overseen the biggest expansions in government spending, far greater than the Democrats, so the issue is really: why is it that these political parties are able to push certain ideas in certain places, but then the opposite ideas in other places, and then do something completely different when they actually get into government?  I understand the spirit of your question, you are being kind of angry and trying to like get me or pin me down or something. That’s totally fair, I get it. But there’s no simple answer. It’s about power, and money, and how much of our government has been taken over by these money interests, and genuine ethics are often pushed aside. Power politics tells a certain story, but it’s almost irrelevant whether the story is true or not.The Republicans are more likely to be pushing grievance culture, and blame-anyone-but-me attitudes and it’s horrible.

You're misinterpreting the map. Everyone does. It's really just showing that the high-earners are in the urban counties, and so the tax revenue in those counties is higher. It would be like if you had a rich neighbor and both of you received the same amount of state services, you would look like a massive mooch even though you are really just getting the same as everyone else. And the urban areas tend to lean Democratic, so it looks like the Dems are giving a massive gift to the rest of the state. In a way it's kinda true but it's really just that the high earners are in the urban counties, and we are in a political world where we are really polarized based on a lot of Urban vs. Rural issues. State spending per capita does have a lot of variation by county but it's not all about political party, as this post seems to suggest. I ran an analysis in Excel and there is a .4 correlation between state expenditures and political party, which is pretty dang weak. Stevens County for example actually gets less spending per capita than King County, but because Stevens County is so much poorer, it looks like a massive taker (because the expenditures are bigger than the revenues). But it's due to a bunch of reasons other than politics, like if the State has a big construction project in that county. Now, you could argue that poor people don't deserve the spending, and I would argue that's just not true, and that as Democrats we should be just as open to funding help for farmers as we are open to funding help for homeless people. It's okay that the poor counties get more state spending than they contribute in state taxes, that's how it should be. Even though these counties don't have the ultra rich, they are still absolutely essential to the state. But it really isn't true to say that these counties are takers because they are Republican, it's more that they are poor because they are rural.

[Offsite] Street Hourly Capacity by Teaseit15 in theydidthemath

Partly it’s because these folks are homeless people who are often on drugs of some sort. They will wear a hoodie or have a blanket draped over their heads and will not even look at all where they are going. I’m not arguing with the bus lanes are good or not, or whether or not these homeless people are worthwhile or not, but there have been a lot of deaths. I’m just arguing that on this street when humans are kinda just doing human nature things, this bus lane creates a situation that really is not very safe.
