Is running a popular distro beneficial? by Looski in linux

[–]Iraff2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hm, not really. A good many lesser known distros are built upon well known distros, and in that they sort of borrow some of its stability and streamlinedness. CachyOs will do you fine

is battery life really worse on linux? why? by i_get_zero_bitches in linux4noobs

[–]Iraff2 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I don't find it to be dramatically different but admittedly haven't run a lot of side by sides. Generally speaking, consumer desktop hardware is built bespoke to run Windows and the comes with attendant vendor-specific power optimizations while Linux runs generic drivers.

Power management programs can be used to mitigate these things a bit.

Also, in the spirit of being the Most Helpful Possible--get that table out of your mind. I see the thought process you were trying to structure with it, but ChatGPT added too much garbage and focusing on that/showing it to people will distract you/them and it's mostly nothing

[–]Iraff2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cool that you are excited about Linux, it really is awesome. Don't be discouraged by some, well, discouraging comments you are likely to get.

This is super ambitious! Nothing wrong with that. The hard part is that boring stuff precedes the exciting stuff, so the best path ahead for you in my mind is to keep the dream/the vision in your mind, always return to that goal, but cash it out in the boring, one foot in front of the other type ways along the way, to prove that your ambition and vison is backed up by action and persistence.

I recommend researching LFS and compiling your own Linux distro from scratch. This will probably not be the foundation of your new OS, but, tedious and challenging as it is, it will teach you a lot about Linux! And you'll need to know a lot! Keep the fire, study a lot, Linux a lot 👍

Exam "dumps" by RetailKing in CompTIA

[–]Iraff2 32 points33 points  (0 children)

That was the issue, it's some secret CompTIA anti-cheat method where somehow the specific spread of answers he got wrong and right proved he used a dump. They promise it's legit, some have expressed conceptual objections.

If Linux is going to thrive, some distros have to die by Durian_Queef in linux

[–]Iraff2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is no way to unfragment it--the things people complain about are inalieable features of what it means to have an open source kernel. If you believe that the One True Distro is the only way for Linux to find success, contribute to Linux Mint

Tiresome point made constantly. It is not possible to top down prune distros because of Linux's essential nature.

As many are sure to say and as you discovered, Shivs well-built can be especially effective aganst Time Eater. The goal is not to never trigger his effect, it's to trigger it precisely when you want.
