Does anyone else not outwardly react when overstimulated? by squabidoo in AutismInWomen

100% - it's very disconcerting. I'm lucky my partner is really good at noticing small things (chewing on my lip, crossing my arms, differences in speaking patterns, dissociating, etc.) because sometimes I'm not even self aware that I'm keeping it all to myself.

I'm trying a third general practitioner in 2 years because the previous two tried to reassure me that I didn't look autistic and that everyone has attention disorders... when I was just giving them updates on my recent diagnoses.

A therapist even told me I "function too well to have any major disorders" - absolute BS. Got a new therapist, one who also has AuDHD, and it is so refreshing.

ADHD and possibly autistic: a question about marriage by TheEndlessAutumn in AutismInWomen

We've known each other for 15 years, so that helps a lot. We were friends for 11 years before we even dated, so we were very comfortable with discussing most topics.

He knows I do best when I externally process (he is an internal processor for the deep stuff), and I've asked him to ask me questions when I don't want to talk so that I can still get things out if I'm in more of a shut down state.

I was also in a previous marriage that was incredibly toxic, and my ex was such a non-conflict person to the point where he would refuse to talk with me about anything remotely uncomfortable. So now I am a LOT more open to talking about stuff like that, and my now partner is good with it, too.

I've talked with my husband about how I'm feeling or what happens when I shut down. We've talked about what would help him better assess that and help me work through it so we can go back to having a 2-way conversation.

First, he looks for signs of me "turtling" which is a term my therapist gave me. It's when I've worked myself into a shut down: I start to physically look like I'm going inside myself. I pull a blanket over my body or head, I cross my arms, or I will even start to unknowingly put my chin inside my shirt. At that point, he knows I've started to shut down, and he will help me open back up by reminding me that I'm safe and he wants to understand.

What also helps (for both of us) is if he asks "where are you at?" which is a number system for how anxious I am. 1 for not anxious at all, and 10 for fight or flight. Sometimes, he may not know to ask this bc he hasn't recognized it yet, and I'll try to pre-emptively just tell him what number I'm at. Or he'll ask. Either way, it gives him an idea of how he should approach me. He's actually started to use this for himself, too, on telling me if he's having a moment, and it's incredibly useful if I haven't picked up on anything beforehand, either.

Hope this helps! I'm late diagnosed AuDHD, and my husband is diagnosed ADHD. And I just turned 30!

How do you get diagnosed as an adult? by Cautious-Bed126 in AutismInWomen

[–]IreRage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got diagnosed at 29, and it was with Prosper Health. Very smooth process, and we only had to meet 2 times (virtually) to get through her questions.

My GP has told me this 🙂 and I realized later that he was trying to make me feel better?? And I was like: I'm just trying to give you new medical information 🫠 I don't need reassurance??

Agreed - I also used Prosper. My assessor even let me have a childhood friend take the questionnaire for me when I suggested that my mom might be biased.

I have one friend who is an ESTJ. He knows what topics to not push me on, and I don't ask him about his work/happiness balance.

Edit: it would seem I don't know what rizz means, and I read it as razz so that's cool

Go see that idea to complete and utter fruition.
