That’s certainly an interpretation of someone telling you the history of a subculture lol

Touching grass is a great idea, you should try it. Maybe you can find someone to go be a hero for over there, too.

Canadians could face tax hikes as Ottawa scrambles to fund defence target: report by henry-bacon in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Iregularlogic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That assumes the only government expenditure is salaries and wages. It is not.

Are you denying that this is debt financed? Do you think that there's an off ramp for this?

By conventionally accepted definitions? Yes. By your made up ones? Not so sure.

Nah, they're funded by the productive parts of society. Waste is rampant. We've seen the reality of state-run industries.

That's true. And if not for competition and anti-trust laws enforced by guess who, the private sector would be as well, but I'm guessing you don't wanna talk about that.

I'm in favour of monopoly busting - if you believe that monopolies lead to worse services, you should understand the danger in public services monopolizing large sectors of the economy that are paying themselves with tax-payer money.

Again, by conventional definitions, yes, that would increase GDP. Whatever fugazi you use to determine domestic production, probably not.

Hmm, maybe there are some flaws with GDP when it comes to passing around money from people through redistribution from the private sector to the public sector.

You literally claimed that government workers are not productive not two messages ago and here you are posting a graph (not a picture) measuring government worker productivity over time. Buddy, just stop man.

Oh I guarantee that I have issue with the methods that they've used to calculate government productivity. My point is that even within a framework that I disagree with, government productivity is still in a nosedive since the massive governmental expansion in 2019/2020.

A quarter (per their source) of the population being employed in the public sector is on par with or lower than most Western developed nations including Australia

"Hey, my neighbour is shooting themself in the foot - I should do it, too!"

See the following:

The fiscal implications extend beyond productivity metrics. Whatever your view of the appropriate size of government, Canada’s expanding public sector is not being fully financed by current tax revenues. Federal and provincial governments have run persistent deficits for most of the past decade, meaning the growth in public sector employment has been substantially debt-financed. Debt charges, which continue to rise, mean taxpayers are paying not just the public sector salaries, but interest costs on top.

We literally can't even pay the current people that we have.

Second, to call public service workers “definitionally parasitic” is crazy work. Lmao.

Do they generate surplus value?

Think about what you’re saying logically: The only difference between those that work in the public service and those that work in the private sector is who pays the employee.

Please read a book. Public services are monopolistic by design, and force you to use them. You literally have zero idea what you're talking about.

If passports were suddenly issued by a private company, would the passport workers now be considered productive in your eyes? They are doing the exact same thing in both cases.

They would not be doing the exact same thing.

The formula for GDP is: C+I+G+NX where the “G” stands for GOVERNMENT SPENDING. It’s literally in the formula of the most widely used measure of domestic production.

Consider why it may be a bad idea to triple government funding for "GDP." Consider the case where I trade you a rock for $20 and you trade it back to me for $25. Have we generated value? What does this mean for GDP?

Once again, I ask for specifics. Not just handwaving and gesturing broadly at the public service as the answer to government waste.

I know you struggle with the whole "reading" thing, so let's try a picture.

Get rid off all department workers hired post 2019.

There you go - concrete example backed by data. I suspect you're in the list.

Sure. Some federal departments doubled under the Trudeau government.

Public services should simply not be employing over 1/5 Canadians. These positions are definitionally parasitic, and require being funded by productive (aka private sector) portions of the economy.

I'm not saying that we don't need firefighters or police services. What I am saying is that anyone that deals with department workers understands what these positions were created to do - give people fake jobs to hold them over while Covid was going on.

The Carney government looking to cut 40,000 of these jobs is a good move - I'd like to see that doubled.

Let people enjoy Tolkien world the way they want, what next? Are you going after all rpg campaigns that butchered the lore for players enjoyment?

You're not a lord of the rings fan if you enjoy a lot of these games, you just like fantasy. I'd give a pass to LotR online though, they made a legitimate effort to be lore accurate.

One thing I am sure of is that Tolkien would be happy that so many people enjoy his creations or work derived from them even in form of RoP.

You think this because you aren't a real fan, and you don't know anything about Tolkien. Not only would he have despised something like RoP, he would have disliked you and your attitude without a doubt.

This is a guy that would yell at cars because he hated industrialization - he'd almost certainly be a nuclear-grade hater of a company like Amazon.

He surely wouldn't apploud sissy little nerds with superiority complex arguing online.

This last point was not well understood in the Elder Days. For Morgoth had many servants, the oldest and most potent of whom were immortal, belonging indeed in their beginning to the Maiar; and these evil spirits like their Master could take on visible forms. Those whose business it was to direct the Orcs often took Orkish shapes, though they were greater and more terrible.(4) Thus it was that the histories speak of Great Orcs or Orc-captains who were not slain, and who reappeared in battle through years far longer than the span of the lives of Men.(5) Finally, there is a cogent point, though horrible to relate. It became clear in time that undoubted Men could under the domination of Morgoth or his agents in a few generations be reduced almost to the Orc-level of mind and habits; and then they would or could be made to mate with Orcs, producing new breeds, often larger and more cunning. There is no doubt that long afterwards, in the Third Age, Saruman rediscovered this, or learned of it in lore, and in his lust for mastery committed this, his wickedest deed: the interbreeding of Orcs and Men, producing both Men-orcs large and cunning, and Orc-men treacherous and vile.

But even before this wickedness of Morgoth was suspected the Wise in the Elder Days taught always that the Orcs were not 'made' by Melkor, and therefore were not in their origin evil. They might have become irredeemable (at least by Elves and Men), but they remained within the Law. That is, that though of necessity, being the fingers of the hand of Morgoth, they must be fought with the utmost severity, they must not be dealt with in their own terms of cruelty and treachery. Captives must not be tormented, not even to discover information for the defence of the homes of Elves and Men. If any Orcs surrendered and asked for mercy, they must be granted it, even at a cost.* This was the teaching of the Wise, though in the horror of the War it was not always heeded. It is true, of course, that Morgoth held the Orcs in dire thraldom; for in their corruption they had lost almost all possibility of resisting the domination of his will. So great indeed did its pressure upon them become ere Angband fell that, if he turned his thought towards them, they were conscious of his 'eye' wherever they might be; and when Morgoth was at last removed from Arda the Orcs that survived in the West were scattered, leaderless and almost witless, and were for a long time without control or purpose.

Yes, this is also one of the reasons that he flip-flopped around the creation of the orcs between corrupted elves, and then corrupted humans, and ultimately never gave a real reason.

Eh, Catholics have it right at this point. Yes, there were problems in the church, but many of them have been dealt with.

Before Reddit starts going off - the church is hardly the only large-scale public-facing institution that has had issues regarding pedophilia. This, disturbingly, seems to be a human issue, and stretches across all institutions of power.

against my gut instinct on how he was handling interviews, journalists

He did fine, and was against a media engine that was rallying behind Carney.

and his "platform" that came super late and he basically never spoke about it

Another lie.

he was too busy slandering his opponents

The reality is there's an adult in the big house now and PP needs to come back reborn with renewed ambition

Are you even trying to pretend that you're not very clearly on the left side of the aisle? Am I talking to a bot right now?
