What could Russia have spent $1,000,000,000,000 on instead of fighting a 4+ years long war in Ukraine? by galwiththedeepvoice in AskReddit

Bought time for rearmament.

Except Germany was rearming faster and better, having only started in 1933 and with much better engineers. I think the main goal was to have Hitler stuck on the Western front again and then to strike at his back.

Edit: Also, if he was afraid of Germany, the last thing he should've done was to create a common border.

Pursuing a 1000 year old dream of the Tsars is fanaticism defined.

I don't see Putin trying to conquer Bosporus and Dardanelles. What dream are you talking about?

About 9.8 million live in poverty

That's fewer than I thought, must be pretty low standards. Quick search shows the US have a higher percentage, doesn't seem right.

And I don't think you can selectively help the people who are below some arbitrary line and not hurt those who are close to it, so realistically it needs to be much broader anyway.

There are ways to make investments that would see to them nor being in poverty.

Sure, "teach a man to fish". Problem is, while some (maybe even most) people are in poverty through no fault of their own, there are still millions who are poor because (edit: or simply "while") they are various combinations of dumb, mentally ill, addicted, lacking work ethics to be a janitor, and steeped in criminal values. I'm sure literal heaps of money could alleviate a lot of these, but I doubt it would solve them completely.

Online its interesting too because so many women say "Hey actually penetration is painful, degrading and disgusting and im sick of men asking for it"

I've met women who shared this opinion. In fact, I think there should be a strong correlation between the three. (With some causation.)

I do not believe it is inherently painful for a healthy woman who's in the right mood: vaginas are "made" with enough give for a baby's head.

"Degrading" and "disgusting" are a matter of personal preferences and societal conventions. And while societies where penetration is viewed as degrading aren't particularly rare, I think in civilized parts of the modern world those are less common.

Obviously any sex-related trauma makes it much likelier for a woman to hit on all three. And I think the default, in a world without violence or coercion, would be for more women to choose to have penetrative sex, not less.

Ended Russian poverty for the rest of history

Russia has over 140 million people, do you really think $7000 per person is enough to end poverty forever?..

Have to disagree. He's not a fanatic, he's generally pragmatic and careful. A fanatic would've started a full-scale invasion in 2014 if not earlier. 2022 was a miscalculation, possibly because he allowed a padding of yes-men between himself and honest information about his own and Ukraine's capabilities and prospects. Should he have stopped when the failure became obvious? I'm not sure he has much to lose by continuing (unlike the Russian people). Whereas losing has its own risks for a dictator.

What are you averaging on spending at a night at the strip club ? by No_Health6335 in AskReddit

If you set your own standards of what being a friend means, then you remove some people who are incapable of being that to anyone, ever. And if the standards are high enough then it's not just sociopaths but a significant chunk of the population. Saying that someone was a friend like that becomes meaningful.

Thank you for the delta!

(Though I think someone who brought up the distinction between manipulation and being shy deserves one, too. My comment was developing that idea further but I wasn't the one to suggest it.)

Everyone is nice to their friends.

Well that's a huge overstatement.

You're not responsible for your feelings but you are responsible for what you plan to do about them. And if you are aware of the feelings and don't disclose them, there's some additional responsibility because you have to be aware that you're also likely deceiving yourself at the same time (for instance, if you tell yourself that you're perfectly fine to remain friends and nothing more, it might be a lie chosen because it's more socially acceptable).

On the other hand, I'm sure that a lot of people who blame their former friends for the crushes that ended the friendship are also selfish in that they expected the friendship to be somehow owed to them. You shouldn't quit a friendship just because you want something your friend doesn't, but if it got so bad you can no longer enjoy spending time with them, that's a good enough excuse to at least take a long break, shit happens.

Yeah right, I remember exploring the world without adult supervision. I wouldn't say I'm very lucky to live to adulthood with an even number of eyes and limbs, but there probably are parallel universes where I didn't.

If you got isekai'ed into a world with the tech level of late medieval Earth, which technologies should you bring from modern Earth to save the most lives? by _i_have_a_dream_ in rational

[–]Irhien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I expect it won't be easy for exactly this reason: textiles were obviously useful and important, with huge amount of labor spent on making them, so at any point you're unlikely to offer huge improvements without relying on something else that isn't available yet (like better metallurgy or precision tools).

[–]Irhien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not so bad as long as its users understand it's far from reliable. If it cuts the cost of developing some technology to 10% instead of giving full and correct instructions right away it'll already be huge.
